Anybody use a Garmin Oregon 450t for hunting? Just received one for my birthday from my brother and just wondering what the pros and cons are.

Our elk camp was visited by a game warden (damn nice guy) who had the 450t & hunting map. You could see exactly where area boundaries were, landowner boundaries were & what animal seasons were open as well as which type you could harvest. Damn sweet little product, I had it figured out in about 10mins it's that easy. Cons? Yet another piece of kit to lug around, but worth it IMHO.

I have used mine alot. For the past 18 months or so for hunting, backpacking and teaching land navigation, etc.. Best GPS I have used. Accurate, tough and well made unit. The touchscreen is intitutive, fast and WASS enabled it consistantly gets me within 5 to 10 feet of whatever I am trying to find. Works well under light to medium overhead cover.

Great for finding tree stands in the dark or locating state and federal land. The current screen is significantly better than the early ones which could be hard to see in full sun. Battery life could be better but is still very acceptable. For best use get the 1:24,000 maps. Would buy another in a heartbeat if this one went down. You can do alot with this unit.

Here is a excellent website on the Garmin 450T with lots of advice and tips .http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/ .

I would steer clear of anything touch screen, gloves dont work sometimes and cold fingers dont ether...I like buttons like on the 62 series of units of garmin GPS units

When I need gloves, I wear GI wool gloves with the finger tips cut off. They work very well and keeps my hands warn in all but the colderst conditions. You can also get E-Tip Gloves that aren't expensive and work with touch screens. Several companies make them.

I used my 450T in Colorado & Wyoming last year. Dowloaded the huntinggpsmaps for each state, and they proved to be an excellent reference tool when hunting public land!!! To me, the cost was well worth the benefits, especially for a non-resident unfamiliar with the territory.
I also have e-touch gloves, got em @ EMS and they work fine with the 450T's touch screen and my dog's Alpha unit.
Great unit, good luck!
