TRG 22 Bolt Problem

I'm having a strange issue with my TRG. I brought it to the range today and all was working fine. After about 20 rounds, the bolt became very hard to unlock. If the trigger is not pulled, everything cycles very smoothly. After the trigger is pulled, it takes a lot of force to unlock the bolt. After the bolt is unlocked, it opens back smoothly. This happens with and without the magazine inserted. Also, it happens even if the trigger is pulled but the chamber is empty.

Any ideas?

Can you tell if the trigger group is dragging on the bolt? Can you drop the trigger group and see if the bolt runs smoothly? That will isolate the bolt from the trigger group at least in terms of next steps. Also inspect the lug area on the bolt and breach to ensure nothing is causing an issue.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you pull the trigger group out, you must remove the bolt before re-installing it or you will damage the TRG trigger sear.

Also, I'd also take the bolt apart and inspect the internals to make sure something is not damaged. When you lift the bolt handle it of course cocks the spring, etc. and if that were damaged I could see that also binding up the action.

IMPORTANT NOTE AGAIN: If you pull the trigger group out, you must remove the bolt before re-installing it or you will damage the TRG trigger sear.

Happened on mine it was a bur on the bolt body where the bolt rotates. When I took the bolt apart a flake of metal fell out and it smoothed back out.

I would do a good cleaning. Clean the bolt lug recesses in the action, disassemble the bolt, clean, then relube. Make certain you lube the back of the bolt lugs and the area on the cocking piece where the firing pin rides on the back of the bolt. I would guess at least one of these friction surfaces is very dry, and grimy.

Well, I took the bolt out and gave it a good cleaning. I took out the firing pin and cleaned that part. The bolt cycles more smoothly, however, it still feels like there's more resistance than there should be after the trigger is pulled. Can anyone confirm pulling the trigger affects the smoothness of cycling the bolt? Before, it felt like there was something stuck and I had to really use a lot of force, now it feels like there's some sort of spring resistance (maybe this is normal?).

I also took the trigger assembly out and cleaned it. the only thing I didn't do was to disassemble the extractor as I couldn't figure it out (the instructions are not very good to newbies).

You are exactly right, there is spring resistance when you open the bolt after pulling the trigger. You are cocking the firing pin spring. Look at the silver cocking tab on the bottom of the back of the bolt, as you lift the bolt handle it rides against the ramp cut in the ring around the bolt where the bolt handle is attached.

Lube this area with some grease and it should be nice and smooth.

If you want to see what is going on, take the bolt out of the gun and flip it upside down. Using the plastic disk bolt tool that came with the rifle, rotate the back of the bolt counter clockwise. Then turn it back to where it was. This is what is happening when you lift the bolt handle after pulling the trigger.

If you still think it is too much resistance, I would take it to someone and have a second set of eyes look at it.

if you pull the trigger with the bolt handle half lifted it will drop it on the ramp and might make it feel a little notchy when you lift the bolt handle. i hand worked mine a little and its very smooth now. i make sure to never pull the trigger(empty chamber) unless the bolt handle is locked all the way down. love my trg, one of my favorite guns. liked it so much i bought one in 300wm.

Another update:

I went to the local gunshop and tested the bolts on a few few TRGs and they feel pretty much the same as mine. So all is good. I guess the bolt needed a good cleaning!
