I am looking to buy a new firearm as I have completed a training program at work where I get a large bonus. I have already decided that I want a new bolt action rifle that I can do some different barrels on. I feel like both of these will be good options for that set up. I would start with a .308 barrel for it and then start expanding my collection as time goes on.

The rifle would be used for shooting steel and paper out to 1k yards and hunting.

I am putting out this post looking for some advice from people who own one or the other.

A close friend and shooting buddy of mine has a TRG 42 in 300 win mag and I love the gun. The big thing that I really love is the trigger. most of my rifles have two stage triggers and the sako trigger is very top notch. I also like the ergonomics of the TRG.

I have never fired a SRS but i have handled one before and it feels very good. I didnt think I would like the bull pup design at first but i felt like I can get used to it very quickly. The trigger on it felt good as well, but not what I really like as far as being two stage. I like the idea of how easy it would be to change barrels on the SRS as well. Also with the SRS I feel like the compactness will be very beneficial for hunting. I would start with the standard length hand guard and also get the short covert hand guard for reducing weight while hunting.

I have read through the entire DTA sticky thread and many threads on the TRG as well. Really I am looking for experience to talk me one way or the other.

Thanks for any help.

Honestly, I think it depends on your budget and how important the barrel-swap versatility is to you? The .300WM TRGs are being phased out but for the most part they can still be had along with the .338LM or the .308WIN TRG-22. They are great rifles and a very good value. That said, while the price of entry is higher for an SRS, you get a level of versatility that you don't see with most other precision rifles; so much so that about a year after I got my SRS I started selling off my other precision bolt guns. I now have 4 caliber conversions for it supported by a single top-tier optic. For hunting, the short 18" .300WM or .338LM barrels are really impressive and give you a very compact rifle, but it's still got some heft to it compared to most hunting rifles (The Sako is in a similar position).

Bottom line, it depends on your budget and how important the barrel swapping features are.

budget is $10k of the bonus, optics could be included in that price if I can swing it, but if not I have spare optics that could be used until the time for a top tier optic could be had. The barrel conversion is very important because I want to be in the same position as you and start getting conversion kits for the SRS or TRG. The way I see it any rifle with a fixed lug can be fairly easy to change the barrel as all I would need is an action wrench and headspace gauges to change it. That is the way i see barrel changes on the TRG working. Am I wrong in that?

In that case, then definitely go the SRS route, especially since you've already gotten behind one and it hasn't freaked you out. The trigger issue has been a non-issue to me, coming from years of shooting bullpups with their shitty trigger, the SRS's is really nice! But while it's highly adjustable, it's not a 2-stage, which some people are married to. If you can handle that, then I think you're set. The trick now is actually getting a rifle - the backlog is in the 3-6 month range now.

better check up on the date - I just recently heard 1 year on new orders ...

The nice thing about the SRS is SA / LA in one rifle - don't think the TRG can do that - most rifles can't. I really like the idea of 1 chassis for all the calibers I want to shoot.

It appears you have already made up your mind bro. If you are looking for someone to talk you out of a DTA, good luck finding that person. If there was such a person, they have obviously never had the pleasure of using this awesome system. I recently aquired a DTA. The only downfall is that you will be lucky to get one by November.

My dealer has a few on order. I'd be surprised if it was more than 4 weeks out. PM me if you want his details. You will save a few hundred off msrp too.

If you want a Switch Barrel Setup then I suggest the DTA SRS Route too. It just doesn't get any easier and better than that for a Single Do It All Rifle "System".

The TRGs Action and Barrels and Known to be OVER TIGHT in the factory form, so if you don't have the right tools and experience then I suggest you'll want to send it to a competent Smith every time.

As far as other options go, you might want to look into Accuracy International Arctic Warfare or MKIIIs. They're not as easy as the DTA setup but none the less still easy to do in your Garage.

Check out this thread for the comparison between AIAW and TRG22. It's another option for ya.
