I am in the process of installing my new Criterion barrel on my Savage model 10. I also got an oversized recoil lug with my new barrel. It measures about .240". This obviously much larger than the stock recoil lug. My problem is that it does not fit in the inlet of the accustock. The inlet measures about .180". My question is can I open this up on my own with a dremel? Or should this be done by a gunsmith? Thanks.

You could, but I wouldn't. Should be done by a gunsmith. If you did it with a dremel make sure you open it up on the front.

If you want it uniform please bring it to a tool and die shop.
I'm sure there's one close in your area and it would be a piece of cake and very inexpensive .

Sometimes it's much easier to find a shop like that than a gunsmith .

Should it be opened up to the exact size of the recoil lug?

It's suppose to have a snug but not overly tight fit so explain that to the person doing the job. If you decide to take it to a tool and die shop.
Bring it in and show them , They are going to measure it them selves anyways.
