so a friend of mine has been doing precision shooting for about 5 years and i decided i wanted in.. so i bout a remington sps tact. in .308. i want to do all i can to make it accurate and from what ive read the factory stock isnt very, so what would be a good stock to get that i can grow into? i want to do a badger ordinance magizine conversion eventually. so i want something that will be good to eventually do that with. i have some more questions and LOTS to learn and take in so thank you in advance and you will have to excuse my lack of knowledge.

get a chassis. AI, XLR, McRees, KRG would be my choice, then upgrade the trigger. send the bolt to phx custom rifles or pro precision rifles to get a knob. idk ive just got a hate for factory remy knobs. slap a stickker on the barrel itll make it go faster like those stupid hondas. jk

o and congrats on the new obsession.

Good choice on the sps tactical. Bell and Carlson are a good choice for the price, but they are hard to find right now. If you want to spend a bit more, Manners and Mcmillan are awesome choices too.

it was the same base rifle that my buddy started with and he has done very well with it, he tore it down after wearing the barrel out and is building a .260.

i was thinking of doing a chassis because then i could just be done with the stock and the mag at the same time for roughly the same $$. i was also thinking about a nightforce for the optics? any suggestions there?

so i bought a timney trigger, and im going to send the bolt out to have the knob changed and possibly have the bolt fluted for that sexy factor... and i think ive decided on a manners stock but not 100% on that yet

Kind of depends on the type of shooting you will do most. The SPS tac is the perfect length barrel to use as a mult-purpose rifle. You can go with something like a manners elite or HS precision LTR take-take of / NF or Vortex compact and make a light hunter shooter. On the other side, you can put it in a chassis, or Manners T5 / NF or comparable 3-15x50 and have a range / comp rifle.

PM sent as well

Shop the for sale section of the forum and eBay for out of stock parts. They pop up for sale quite a bit. Often times even new in box.

its going to be a range gun and possibly shoot some comps. wont be hunting with this rifle.

i agree, and thats on the list, but 1500$ isnt in the budget at this moment in another month or so ill buy one . ive been modding diesel trucks for years and we allways preach supporting mods before the big stuff like injectors or turbos.. these are things that i see as supporting mods. from what i have read and seen the stock rem stocks are less than accurate. commonly touching the barrel and just dont like the look.

Go with a chassis. Then you don't have to worry about bedding or inletting for bottom metals and barrel contours. If you sell the sps down the road, keep the chassis and just torque in the new barreled action and hit the range. My sps sits in a mcree. It loves berger 168 vld and 175 smk over varget in lapua brass and cci primers. Shoots the 155.5 full bore well to over re15, but I have to single feed. Just got in some 178 hpbt to try. Probably should have just got some more 175smk as they perform extremely well. Last 3 shot 100 yd group on paper was 0.129 cc.

For the money and performance I like the McMillan or hs precision. They are usually around here for an affordable price. Chassis are just plain awesome though. Took a while for an old country boy shooter to get the feel for them but just like a diesel pick up minor tweaking has great results. Good luck, have fun and congrats on your new obsession. (It really is addicting)

Get the best scope you can buy. Shoot out the barrel, then think of upgrading the stock.
The 700 is a really accurate factory rifle. Period.

I bought a .243 700 SPS Varmint and am in the process of upgrading it.

So far:

Rock Solid Chassis
Weaver 20moa Base(bedded)
Vortex Low Rings(Seekins)
10X SWFA SS Scope
Timney 510 Trigger

I'll shoot it like that for the next year or so. Future upgrades include a 5-20 scope when funds are available and a better barrel once I shoot this one out.

I need to buy a base too. Cant decide on one, there's so many. I like the idea of the titanium just cause its trick buttttttt... what do yall think?

I thought about a Ti rail from Murphy Precision but decided that it was a waste of money.
I bought an EGW base from Optics Planet for less than $40 shipped and it works great.
Bases are not aerospace technology... one accurately machined rail is as functional as the next.

I glass-bedded my 700SPS-Varmint (26" heavy barrel) in a Bell & Carlson A5 stock and mounted a Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP using Leupold STD bases and Leupy medium 30mm rings. So far, its a consistent 0.5-0.6 MOA shooter with my hand loads (42.0gr Reloder 15 under a 168gr SMK or 44.5gr of VV N550, also under a 168gr SMK or Nosler CC). I also get great results from 44.0gr RL15 under a 168gr Hornady A-MAX.

I'm working on leqrning about reloading but I'm far from knowledgeable about it so ya'll are gonna have to help me out when it comes to the handload lingo. I plan to reload so its things I need to learn/know

Just get a Weaver 20moa base and bed it with jb weld. Weaver has a recoil lug built in just like the higher priced Seekins, etc.

Yeah I forgot that part... better if you can get a rail with a recoil lug. The EGW did not so I opened up the holes and threads on mine for 8-40 screws and pinned the base with two 1/8" stainless dowel pins after bedding it with devcon steel putty.

whelp a member on here contacted me about a stock, and i bought a bell and carlson tactical medalist. pretty excited, the color should work real well with the black on the actuon and barrel.

Nice pickup. I am very happy with mine. A bit on the heavy side though.

I agree with this. They are made in USA and are top notch. Not to mention the low price.

Start by shooting the gun, for a while, then "upgrade". Just me, Josh. You'll save lots of cash. I shoot lots of Custom guns.,TRG's ,GAPs ,Stags ,DPMS SASS. My "out of the box" 5R Remmy, is still one of my Favorites. It shoots "as good, or better" than all the others.Just me, Josh.

I still have my 700 tactical in the less than desirable Hogue stock. It's not terrible but lacks the rigidity I would like. That being said don't forget about a bipod and a rear bag. There are plenty of options.
Hand loads make a world of difference, components are difficult to find now but give it time. Once you find a load your rifle likes you'll be blown away. The 3 shot group that is circled is from my rifle at 100 with the recommended accuracy load for 150 grain bullets.

I think scope rails and rings are undervalued, I may not have the nicest glass but I make sure my base and rings are rock solid. I went with Seekins for what it's worth.

Good choice on a stock, I'm sure you got a deal. I decided to go for the gold so I'm waiting on a Manners T4A with the chassis system. The main advantage is not having to bed it, unless you want to skim bed it. Either way a new stock will aid in your consistency, which will lead to accuracy...maybe.

The main thing is have fun and enjoy yourself. If you can't make it to the range dry fire and work on your fundamentals. Congrats and post up some picks as you go!

I get similar results with my SPSS(.5moa or less) and my loads are pretty much the same as yours, only thing I didnt have my H-S stock bedded, doesnt need it.

+1 with Scott. I just ordered my Sightron from him yesterday. I will call him first before I look somewhere else for all my optics needs.

If your on a budget I bough a CHOATE Tactical Rifle Stock to start off with, and so far Ive been happy with it, I put it on my 22-250 which is growing up and becoming a 260 rifle, it cost me $219 and im happy with it, it brought my groups from .5 moa to .35 the only thing I had to do was shorten the front action screw just took it to a frinder and chased it with a die. but good luck ive love the obssesion.

i ended up with a bell and carlson from a member on here for a good deal. very lightly used. so now all i have left to get are rings, so as soon as i know my height ill order them. love your sinature by the way. diesel modding was my first addiction this is now taking the place of that for the most part.

Scott from libertyoptics has made a customer for life!! Scope showed up today and this thing is just plain awesome!!!

Looking good Nick, you will enjoy that scope a lot. I'm ready to see some pics of the rifle as well as group pics. How much long range shooting have you done in the passed?

Put up with the crappy Hogue stock for the time being and put all of your money into scope, rings and mount. I loved it when a guy said he mounted a new gun on his scope...

After that replace the stock. I went with a McMillan.

Edit...I now see you already got your scope and stock. Carry on.

the rest of the gun is almost 200 miles away at twisted firearms, the rifle, stock, trigger, scope base, bipod. I NEED RINGS!! seekins 35mm rings are impossible to find right now... and as far as what ive done thus far? none.

Gotcha, this long range stuff is just as addicting as all the diesel stuff that we have done in the past. I'm sure that you will enjoy the rifle once you get everything back and put together. If you plan on reloading in the future and needs some tips let me know and I will be happy to help.
