All,
I was just wondering what you guys do to get the smell of skunk off a dog after they have been sprayed. I have a 7.5 month old chocolate lab pup that loves to escape and run the country. I just know it's a matter of time before she gets sprayed. I have heard some BS before, but just wondering what works best. Spring is here and I know the skunks are coming.
Thanks

we went through all of this a couple years ago with our huskey, not a dog you want sprayed by a skunk. This is what we used to clean it off. 1qt of hydrogen peroxide mixed with 1/4cup baking soda and 1-2 teaspoons of dawn dish soap. Make a mixture with this and use it like shampoon. It works pretty good to get the smell out. Also Natures Miracle makes a soloution that I hear works very well at it also. You might want to just keep some of it on hand.

The mix Drumie mentions is the stuff to go with. Used it several times with my Giant Schnauzer and a few other dogs. It works better than anything else I've tried. You may still smell it a bit when the dog gets wet for a few days afterward, but it sure knocks down the smell quite a bit. You just have to keep the ingredients on hand and can't keep it stored after it is mixed. Once it is mixed the peroxide degrades to water in a short time, and it no longer works.

^^^ what these guys said. Also, you may want to secure your yard a bit better to prevent escapes. Dog on the loose is not a good thing

The mix works great. We have tons of skunks around here and my GSPs get into them regularly.

One other thing you can do is carry some olive oil in the dog's eyes. It prevents the polecat potion from stinging their eyes.

Mine usually get the spray in the face so scrubbing the face can get the potion in there eyes which is not good for them.

Thanks all. Yea she don't get away that often. It's mainly with my wife and the dog getting way from her. But I have seen skunks in our yard too. Thanks for the info. I knew there were some good home remodies.

The above mix works as good or better than anything I tried and I tried it all. Had my little Jack Daniels rip a skunk in half last July. Everytime he got wet for about 4 more months after he smelled just like the day he got sprayed. It finally wore off. Sad to say but time is the best deodorizer.

Working tomato sauce into their fur asap after being sprayed works well. Then rinse it off. Perhaps repeat once.

This is what I learned from someone whose dog it happened to. Coca Cola to the entire dog, allow to dry and then wash. Allegedly the dog will, after this treatment, be ready for close human contact again.

When I had my rot about eight years ago.Let him out and he got it all I had in the house was Scent-a-way body soap & shampoo. So I figured what the hell suppose to work on humans scent.Washed him let it set on him for ten minutes rinsed and did it a second time an was good as new.Nexts night let him out wasn't five minutes out had to do it all over again. The third night I shoot the little *%&#%#*.The best stuff I've used so far.

No jokes guys, but I have friend in rural San Antonio area - his wife SWEARS by Massengill Douche. She says she gets stares when she loads up on cases at the store. Their dogs get hit frequently and this stuff works. No first-hand experience, but they say it works.

Vanilla extract will also do wonders and the dog will be an inside dog again sooner.

I have a couple german shepherds and when they have been sprayed it took soo long for the odor to dissipate I just decided to let them indoors anyway and just get used to the smell. You don't really notice it after a few mins.

+1 It worked on my Irish Wolfhound numerous times. He just couldn't keep his nose out of skunkworks.

a lot of good ideas. I use baking soda. the only thing i have to add is that i find it helpful to keep the dog wet until you can wash them. usually i'd be out back away from the house when my dog would get sprayed. i'd make him jump in a pond until i could get to the house to wash with baking soda. it seems to make a difference over letting it dry on and washing it off later
