I know this is the rifle section but this involves AR's so I figured this would be better.

Ok, I'm in need of a 9mm AR pistol with about a 5" or so barrel. I want a SBR but don't want to jack with the papers and I don't like the AR pistols because of the buffer tube. SO! The question is.... Is there any way I can build a 9mm AR pistol WITHOUT the stupid buffer tube??? I have seen a 5.56 without it but if I'm not mistaken it had to be piston driven to function properly. I may be wrong but that all the info I have came across.

If I can't do it without the buffer spring then piss on it, I guess ill pay $200 and wait to see if I'm worthy....

    Thanks fellas

In a tradional style AR-15, you can't go without a buffer tube. The carrier needs to go somewhere after a round is fired. You would have to get something that uses a short stroke piston system, like the AR 180, ACR, Para, or Rock River pistol. They don't use the same system as a "normal" AR15.

I cant see it happening without a tube. Expecially since 9mm buffers are normally longer than 5.56 (they dont HAVE to be, but helps conserve bolt catches).

Go SBR, you wont be disappointed.

I've been interested in a 9mm AR SBR myself, but your question is confusing me. Are you wanting an SBR, or just a 9mm AR "pistol" without a buffer tube and subsequently without a buttstock (so that you won't have to deal with the paperwork)? The buttstock in combination with the less than 16" barrel is what classifies the firearm as an SBR, with or without the internal buffer tube. And even if you built a 9mm AR pistol without a buffer tube, just possessing any kind of buttstock that is not "attached and alocated" to a specific non-SBR would warrant the necessity for an SBR tax stamp. So you would still need the tax stamp even if you intended to use a "detachable" buttstock, unless you just planned to maintain and undocumented SBR (which I'm cool with and would never expect you to admit to, because I sure as hell wouldn't either but have thought about many times over, just don't have the money or need to do so right now).

Yea I knew it wouldn't be standard and I figured my option would basically be a rock river but wasn't sure. That sbr 9mm you have there is sexy my friend! God I don't wanna do all that bs again.... On top of that ill have to do it twice, 9mm ar sbr and a mp5 rep sbr. I well it'll be cool when I get em!

    Big time aub,

I may have been unclear. The question and intention is:

I want a 9mm pistol but in a pistol form I do not want the buffer tube hanging out in my way with no purpose. If it isn't possible to build a ar pistol chambered in 9x19 without a buffer tube then my next option will be sbr. Obviously with a sbr setup the buffer tube has a purpose (attach stock) and I am A ok with it then. The point and need for the gun will be to throw in a back pack if needed to do so. The fact of knowing I could conceal a 9mm AR pistol or sbr along with 2000 rounds puts a smile on my face.

Haha well I finally pulled the trigger on a MP5 clone. I've been wanting one for years since I shot a real deal MP5SD with a registered sear. I understand that I won't be able to afford the $20,000 + sear but I can pretend that it is full. As for a name on the trust, get in line man! Haha

No sir it was a friend of mines dad. Biggest gun guru I have ever seen, he has it all along with a class 3 just for a hobby.

It's not for sale as far as I know. I shot it and just thought it had to be the same one. He went to prince a few times with it. I love pretty much anything H&K. Deff worth the coin in my book.
