338 Cheytac

So enlighten me on this one, as I have been shooting Cheytac-based rifles for some time, but have never heard of a .338 version? The only .338 variant I'm familiar with is the .338 SnipeTac. From what I gather, instead of the improved shoulder, this is a standard-case necked down to .338?

ETA: well shit, I see it right there on CH4D's die list (along with a .416 Cheytac)

thanks for getting the question out there for me excaliber. another thing I would like to know is will the gen 2 berger 300gr OTM bullets hold the velocities off the 338 cheytac im getting built? If not what bullet would you recommend? if anyone can help would be much appreciated.

Sierra 300gr SMK would be a great bullet choice

Excaliber, hope all is going well down in Abingdon, I made it back to Glade Springs for an early Christmas, but no time to shoot, weather was perfect around the first of December.

I had one of those barrel eating rifles in 338 Snipetac, performance was amazing, but the throat was gone at 600 rounds, Other folks may have had different results, but the one I had was gone 6 inches up into the barrel, and the accuracy started to go after that.

I think there are several variations from what I understand. 338 Cheytac, Snipetac, 338 Big Bare (Bruce Bare), 338 Extreme, and the 338 Allen Magnum. There may be more now.

The one I had, had a 36 inch barrel with a 1:10 on a Lawron 8000 single shot, and would push 300 grain Sierra's to 3300 with no pressure signs. The bolt got heavy at 3400 (H50BMG @145 grains). The necks on the 338 Snipetac brass cracked (a lot) as well, so I started annealing every shot. May have been the brass, fire formed from Jamison 1 star, the 2 star was a bit better.

I had the opportunity to pick up a 375 Cheytac as well in the past.

Out of those two I much preferred the .375 Cheytac,

No fire forming brass, the brass was and still is available on line, I never had a cracked neck. With a 29" barrel, the 375 pushed 350 grain Sierras to 3200 fps, with no pressure signs, It liked Retumbo @ 130 -132 grains, 134 made for a sticky bolt., (Lawton 8500 single shot).

It would consistently shoot a 1"-1.5" groups at 300 yards even with Barnes 350 grain Barnes X bullets. It had a 1:10 twist as well. The .375 Barrel had well over 1000 rounds and no noticeable throat erosion. Just when you really start enjoying the 338, you had to change the burnt out barrel. I hope this helps and does not deter you from your project.

Other folks may have had different results. but burning that amount of powder, at 145 grains a shot, (40) shots per pound and having to replace the barrel every 600 to 1000 rounds, just got to be a bit to much.

In both my lapua and XTreme, the lapua scenar kicks the sierra's ass all day long. If you point the smk it works much better than out of the box.

Hello Chandalar, Hope everything is going great for ya. I have a friend wanting to build a 338 Cheytac. I`m just trying to get some data for him. Where about`s are you at? Next time your in town let me know and we will do some shooting.

Sounds good, I'm up in Fairbanks AK. I should be that way in the fall.

The Berger 300 grains OTM works just fine in my 338 Snipetac - 1000 m/s using VV 20N29 with good extraction.

I would not start here. With the money put into that rifle and the amount it costs every time you press the trigger, shooting a lower than average for caliber B.C. bullet with sub par flight characteristics is not the answer.

.Solids or Bergers.

Oh yea I'm going with the Bergers in they 338 cheytac. Just wasn't sure if they would hold up. I know the gen 1 Bergers were caving in under extreme velocities. Thanks Excaliber and everyone else.

I have shot both the Berger 300 OTMs & Elite Hunters at 3400+fps out of my 338 DCM (338/408 imp)

Both cope well with the launch pressure & velocity 36" 1-10 Lilja

Have only had it going for a couple of weeks, best so far is 0.33 moa at 620 yards with the 300 EH.

The EH have a jacket thickness halfway between the Gen I & OTM, so hopefully should work well at lower Edge/Lapua speeds.

At the time I had my 338 Big Baer, the Bergers were not out. I use them now in my 338 Edge, but still rely mostly on the SMK'S for most of my shooting.
I had great results with the SMK's when I was shooting the Big Baer. They were not sensitive to jump, have a thick jacket, and could take the 3200fps velocity out of my 30" barrel. I don't have any experience with the Berger at that velocity as to if they hold up.
Also, the SMK'S seem to be more readily available. I would not shy away from them is my point.

I`m talking about the 375 Cheytac necked down to 338. I can`t see the need to blow out the case for more capacity as it is already overbore. The Allen magnum
is blown out and basically an Ackley Imp. I have experienced sticky bolt with cases that doesn`t have much case taper with even mild loads.

...that is, task "press out" neck case .408 Cheytac to size .338?
