First of all, I would like to say thanks for the advise many of you have given me so far.

I have been having an issue with a 7mm rem mag that I own, and the problem is that it won't group for crap. This has led me on a wild goose chase to find a smith that would work with a ruger action. After getting it all priced out, I have decided to abandon that project completely and just do a complete build. I want to keep the price down wherever possible, can you all give me some suggestions on type of action and a reasonable estimate of final cost if I went with a AICS 2.0. Really, all I need are some prices on actions. I can find all the other information I need.

Thanks for the help,
Jordan

PS I would really like to stay in the 7mm family, would you all recommend something other than the Rem Mag?

I'd say the 7 SAUM but brass is really hard to find right now. If you don't reload then 7 wsm all the way.

7wsm is a round I'd consider.

With the parts your looking at. Throw in a Timney trigger, quality barrel, muzzle brake, and I'd say your looking at $2600 in parts and then about $1200 to $1500 for gunsmithing.

I have a Stiller action and I like it a lot. I think it cost around $950, you can also check out Surgeon, Defiance, and Big Horn actions. These seems to be in the $1250 range. The Magnum action will cost a bit more so its another reason you might consider the WSM. If you skip the 7 mag you won't have to deal with the bulge above the belt and you can save on buying the extra die to avoid this issue assuming you reload? If not I would stay with the 7 mag.

I do reload, and since I already have the 7rem mag there would be no extra purchase involved. I am looking at a Bartlein 1:8.4 twist barrel to stabilize the 180 vld's. Since I am low on patience (getting better about it after my last build and learning my lesson) I can get a long action AI 2.0 immediately, but would have to wait on the short.

Does anyone have a suggestion where to order the action from? I am coming up empty with anything in stock, and to complicate matters I also need it left handed, so I will likely have to special order it.

Assuming I have a quality smith assemble the parts, what do you all see as the accuracy potential of this setup?

Try Stiller direct, he's had them in stock before when I called.

From a quality gunsmith there is no reason you can't achieve 1/2" or smaller groups.

I just got my 7 mag back from APA today.

26" Broughton barrel 1/9 twist
Trued Rem Action
Tuned Rem trigger
AICS stock skim bedded

I expect it will shoot bug holes but its going to be a couple weeks till I can shoot it as the bolt is going in for a Badger knob install.

Ill post up how it shoots in a few weeks. I'm also going to be loading the 180 VLD's.

@p229

I am looking forward to getting your range report and would like to pick your brain further about some load development.

Check bugholes.com.com Greg is a hide sponsor and he regularly keeps stiller, trued rem and a couple other types of actions in stock. Good guy to deal with and his prices are good. Same with barrels, he has em in stock.

Also check with Shilen. Their new actions are built by Stiller and you can also order a barreled action from them.

I'm building a 338lm on a stiller right know with a krieger barrel weight for one is months and expensive if you want to keep the cost down you could always find an old rem action get it blueprinted and get a shiling with the stock you want

Probably be about 3 weeks but I will share whatever I can with you. I'm going to make up some loads this weekend with H1000 as I've read good results with it when behind the 180 VLD. I've also had great luck with it in other magnum loads. I have the Berger load data to go off of, so if you would like that just shoot me a PM with your email.
