Gunsmithing reworked action does not fit stock

Hello folks,
I just got my reworked action with new barrel back from the smith and it does not fit into my new Manners stock. When the bolt holes all align the recoil lug is obstructed from dropping in. Its not much, less than a credit card thickness.

I tried putting the action into a different Rem700 stock and had the same challenge.

Taking the Cerekote off would get me really close. Would it be ok to remove some of the steel to get a fit?

Thanks for any advice.

I think you have the upgraded lug. I do not suggest you mod the lug, mod the stock and then bed it as you would do anyway. No big deal.

I think it is a new lug. The Manners stock I have has the metal bedding frame so I am either going to have to modify the lug or get down into the stock and file that.

Is this common when a action has been reworked?

I was thinking I could drop the barrel/action into the stock and go out last night to sight in the scope in preperation of actually shooting this weekend....

Yes, very common to modify the stock. Die grinder or dremel tool is in order. Get yourself some bedding compound, some release agent and some paper tape. This is a relatively easy fix. If you can play with play-dough, you can do this. Don't touch that lug. It's all about adjusting the stock to fit the action, lug and barrel.

I do not suggest you "get down in there with a file". Take it and have it milled to fit. That way it will not look like a squirrel has been after it. Keep it a precision rifle, you will be glad you did.

Here's a perfect example of why you should have one guy build your rifle start to finish, and test fire it before you even see it. I know that doesn't help you, but I would take the stock to someone with a mill, and that knows how to use it. You won't need to bed anything if done correctly. You have a mini chassis. No bedding required. Best of luck

Which side of the lug recess is too short? I have a manners mini chassis and it would take a real thick lug to not fot in the recess. If the lug is hitting on the forearm side of the lug recess have the recess opened and don't worry about bedding or anything. If it is hitting on the rear of the lug recess it is probably a result of faceing the action and the tennon is now a little shorter than the tolerances for the stock. In either case take the stock to someone who knowes what thet are doing and have them mill the mini chassis accordingly.

Called Manners and spoke with Tom. He said send it all in and he would rework the stock to accept the action and do any bedding required. One day turn around and almost no money..... thats customer service!

STR...lesson learned. I had the Rem 700 and added the new Manners. No issue. Then thought lets get a new barrel and have the action trued never thinking it would require so much taken off. I should have just sent it all to one person per your comment.

I am hopefull this takes care of it.

Thanks for all the help

What he said...

If your action was trued, you lost a small amount of material off the face, thus slightly shortening the action and moving the lug back. Tom is good people, you made a wise choice.

Tom Manner is a great guy that cares about his customers. He will do what ever it takes to make it correct, and you happy. BTW, take notice that this is above and beyond on his part since he didn't have anything to do with the build. I'm very happy to see you have a great solution to your issue. It sucks to come so close, and have to continue waiting, but I'm certain it will all be forgotten after you fire your first shot.

STR and Turbobo,
Completely agreed on Tom being a great guy. I called to understand what my options might be and he was quick to make the offer even though I had no thinking that he would do that for me. I was very surprised.....and its not something I would count on.

I am grateful that he is willing to help me out and I know where my future stocks are coming from.

Anything I produce in my business I am willing to take back if the customer is unhappy as long as all the parts are there. They can have a new one or I will give them their money back. It can be tough to make that step but it pays off plus its the way I want to live my life. Nice to see others have the same thinking.
