I am trying to help a friend with his Rem700 223 SPS. He took the action out of the stock to give the rifle a good cleaning and a piece fell out. I have never owned a 223 bolt gun so I have never seen this piece before.
It is a small rectangular metal piece, seems to fit in the magwell somewhere or between the magwell and trigger group but for the life of me I can't seem to figure out where it goes.
Any help would be appreciated.

Measurements are
13/16" x 1 1/8" x 7/16".
Made from a piece of stamped steel that is hollow in the middle. A Spacer of some sort???

Gene, Thank you for the picture but it still dosen't show the piece I am talking about.
In that picture you can see the space between the front of the magwell and the front screw, the shape of that space is about the size of the piece I am talking about, I know that it dosen't go into that empty space but that gives an idea on the size of this piece I am talking about.
I am thinking that it must be a spacer that fits into the magazine somehow to take up some of the room since this rifle is a 223.???

JCH, how does it fit in there?? Can you think of a place online that might have a picture of how it is supposed to be inside the magwell?

Ok, I put the thing in like the picture above. But is it supposed to be loose??

Just kind of flops around in there with it all closed up.

I wonder if the magazine is spung out a little bit. I will try to squeeze the magazine well in some to see if it will take up some of the slack and hold that piece in place a little better.

Is it still loose with the mag installed into the receiver? That usually snugs the piece in between the mag box sides. Once inside the receiver and stock it should stay put.

When it is all installed it is loose, you can shake the rifle and hear it rattling around in there.
