Getting my precision rifle rig in a few days. Aside from ASC is there anywhere else to shoot at longer ranges? Or ranges with steel plates? I'm new to the area, just got here (College Station but I make frequent trips to Houston) for grad school in August. Haven't really shot that much since then.

Thanks,
Kevin

One behing bass pro I think on the south side of town. I think it is close to beltway 8 and 288. Like bayou shooting or something like. Never been but will look into it next time I'm in H Town.

Bayou rifle range is just south of highway 6 and fm288. Great range but private. Used to be a member until I got transferred to Hell aka Nebraska. You can shoot out to 1000 yards after you qualify with a range officer. Basically they want to know that you know what you are doing and you rifle is able to reach 1000 yard. 200 and 300 yard range is open to anyone.

i can walk up and shoot at guest prices right? I don't need to go with a member?

O wow. just checked it is farther away then I thought :(

the only range around Houston is bayou City Rifles and they have closed their membership. You can compete their or go as a guest but that's about it. ASC is all there is for any semi-long range shooting without a long drive.

That range mentioned above is all I know of...I've asked this question too, very few ranges in our neck of the woods.

At one time there was a range in the Winnie area that was 1K but I can't find any data about it...maybe someone will remember that range.

I just became a member at Bayou Rifles. I applied in Sept 2012 and they opened up membership to a limited number of people, based on the number of people that left the club, in March 2013. Did the orientation in March, and I just got down to the actual rifle range yesterday. I live just north of the 610 North Loop, so it's a 37 mile drive for me one way.

I normally go to ASC, and it's nice for some things (shotgun sports), and decent for rifles. The range itself is nice enough, but it can be crowded, and i'm not much on being around people I don't know that are shooting guns, especially that many people. You see some idiots in action at the 50 - 100 yard range, but it's not as crowded over at the 200 and 300. Jump over to the 400 and 600 and the crowd really thins out. I don't care for the handgun range as I'm used to shooting them indoors with a partition between me and the next guy. No partition at ASC.

I liked shooting out at Bayou yesterday. Since it's a 74 mile round trip from my house, I'll probably only go down there whenever I'm planning on spending several hours. I'll still run out to ASC if I'm trying to work up a load or something. When at the 100 yd range there were 2 other people. We called our own cease fires, and it made things pretty easy. Moved over to the 200/300 range and I was the only shooting for 75% of the time, and the other 25% there was only one other guy. I still have to qualify for the 600 - 1000 range, but it looked nice. If anyone ever wants to go, shoot me a PM or email, and I'll meet you out there if I can.
