Hello,

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I just bought two Remington 5rs. One in 308 and one in 223. This is my very first experience with the 700 platforms, and I'm pretty new to bold actions in general. I decided to get a basic rifle to get familiar, and customize from there once I decide what I don't like.

I'm looking at scope bases and am looking for recommendations. First off, I'd like to know which brand of mount to get. I've been eyeing the Larue mounts, as I've liked their other products. But I can't decide on a 20 moa or 0 moa. Both rifles will have IORs mounted. The 223 will have a 3-18x42 FFP, the 308 will have a 6-24x56 FFP. I have IOR rings for both. I shoot at 200 yards most common, but I plan on shooting to maybe 500-600 yards max (I don't have a 1000 anywhere near). I'm worried that with a 20 moa base, I won't be able to get my 100 yard zero.

Second, could anyone tell me which size screws to get for the base? The Larues will come with both, but I noticed the Seekins and Badger mounts have to be ordered for the specific size.

Thanks again!

Andy

Get 20, no problems getting 100 yard zero, 6-48 base screws. A nice torque wrench helps to torque all to the correct lbs. Seekins, Badger are pretty popular, but your choice.

I have used Nightforce, Leupold, Seekins, Badger and EGW before. Everything I have now has a Seekins. Can't really beat the price!! ($95.00)

As I noted in another thread, I have had good success with Leupy STD bases and STD rings. They make Rem 700 bases in both 1- and 2-piece configurations. For distances up to 800 yards, they'll do just fine and you can get the bases and rings for less than $60 all in.

I have the Remington 700 5r in .300 Win. Mag. and I use the Badger Ord. 20MOA rail on it,. I also had the screws upgraded to 8-40 (iirc). I do not think you would have a issue getting a 100yd zero with either rifle with a 20MOA set up, it depends on the adjustment range of your scopes. You do not really need it for the distances you plan to shoot, but it would be nice to have it if you ever want to stretch the guns out if you get the chance to.

My 5R wears Aadland rings & my other 5R wears Tally Tactical skull & cross bones.I also use EGW rails.

NF, torque wrench, little blue locktite. The Nightforce just fit so good. Seekins builds great stuff too, I have Talleys also.

I'm wanting a new bolt .223, looking hard at the 5R ,20". Please post range reports on yours. I would love to see "real life" goups before I buy one.

Save your money and get a EGW 20 MOA... Spend your money on rings.... a 700 mount is a mount from all the usual suspects.

An EGW base will work, but the mounting screws are hex head vice the better torx screws that come with seekins, badger, or NF models. You can always order the torx screws direct from EGW. The reason this matters is that it is very easy to strip the hex head screws if you need to remove the base for any reason.

I recommend, provided the dimensions of your optic support, that you get a 2 piece NF 20moa picatinny base set. It is much, much easier to top feed your 5R if you have a two piece mount. You should be able to do this with most scopes. If it doesn't work, just send them back for a 1 piece rail.

Will do.

FWIW I went with seekins bases.

Hopefully i will have some test shots and fire-formed brass by weeks end.

One thing to keep in mind with the EGW is they don't have recoil lugs so all the stress goes onto the little 6-48 screws. With your 223 it wouldn't be a problem but with the heavier recoiling 308 with a big heavy IOR 6-24 that's a lot of stress on those screws. For the money the weaver tactical is a better base because it has a recoil lug.

While the weaver is a great rail at a hair over $30 the NF and badger rails are still better units. Whatever you get be sure to bed the base because the action is guaranteed to not be perfectly straight.
