I am going for a scope upgrade. The scope will be going on a Remington model 700 .308cal. I will be shooting consistently to 600yds but want to beable to shoot up to maybe 1500yds. I am looking at either the Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 or Vortex PST 6-24x50. Any info or comments on either one of these scopes would be appreciated.

First of all if your seeking for comparison...its not dawn and day..but you totaly see the diff bet the two side to side the how great nf glas to how good pst glass is specialy when your on higher magnif..i own both and id say the vortex hd is much better to USE vs. Bet the two..beside preferences they both will do the job.i love my pst but ill peep on my nf when serious or competition is in the line..if for metal target get the pst use the rest the $ to buy ammo :) good luck..

Oh forgot you said pst is FFP a lot of people prefer them for a reason..is it an advantage? If your going to use them its a plus.never matter to me using sfp..

Wow. Now we're comparing vortex pst to nightforce. Color me speechless.

Have both , vortex great glass for the money , I set them side by side at 600 yard targets and you will tell the difference !

iMOP nightforce

+3 for Nightforce. I have an NXS, and I went to the LGS looking for glass for my AR. They had the exact Vortex you are trying to "compare" against, and I took one look and boxed it up and left (they don't sell NF). Not even a comparison, IMO.

Vortex has built their name on excellent customer service, and rightly so, NOT on super high-end glass. Their pricing is reflective of this.

I have both, but the NF is better glass, especially as the sun starts to set or early morning. The PST is nice, but it just depends on what you plan on using it for and what time of day you'll be shooting. When it's bright, the PST works fine.
My two cents.

Check out this thread. I think it speaks for itself even though the sample data is pretty small. It reflects what I have seen and heard.

Everybody preaches Vortex customer service and how great it is. I agree%100 as they were great the 3 times I used it. Very fast service and free but having to take 2 scopes of 3 different occasions and having to send them in and go through that whole process is not worth it for me. I think that they offer a good product with options usually reserved for $2500 plus scopes. I also think that most of their scopes are good for the average guy who only shoots maybe 50 rounds a month and usually inside 500 yards where the scope and internals don't get much of a work out or a chance to wear out or fail. The two I had were regularly used from zero to the top of the available travel and both ended up with bad tracking issues and canted reticles. The 4 Nightforce that I own have yet to have a hiccup and get treated worse than the Vortex. Others will probably disagree and that is perfectly fine as I know there people out there that use Vortex and use them hard with no problems. I just wasn't one of them. I still recommend them if you want all the features that they offer and don't have the cash, but stress the higher possibility of having an issue. YMMV.

Really? You get what you pay for with this. I bought two PST within a week of each other. I needed one for my 700 (308) and one for my Steyr (300) and bought into the Vortex hooplah big time. I had trouble with both. One did not track accurately and would return to zero. The other had a hair trapped in the reticle. They are the reason I bought my Nightforce. That being said Vortex stands behind their product and customer service is awesome. But the best warranty is one you never have to use. I can not speak of the razor but if I was to spend 2,000 on a scope I would buy one that has been proven in battle again and again not something new and unproven. I tried to go the economic route and it cost me more in the long run.

I did a lot of homework and also compared these 2 scopes, but the final deciding factor was not only better quality with NighForce, but the customer service was exceptional with another scope I had just sent them. You get what you pay for...

^^^^^^^^^^what he said.......... apples to potatoes

When did the PST become the end of the world scope that holds no equal? Oh yeah, when the internet came out?

I had a vortex PST for 14 days... felt like a toy compared to my other NF but I wanted to see what all the rant and rave was about. Oh... and out of the box the illumination knob was seized and when I applied pressure to remove it, the knob broke off. Got to check out that Vortex customer service, which was absolutely amazing by the way, and had the scope back to me within a week repaired and ready to go. That aside, the glass was crystal clear, made 1,000m shots no problem, held zero and the only complaint I had was I couldnt get the elevation low enough on my Savage to get a zero at 100 yards with a 20 MOA base. Vortex said it was a issue with the Savage barrels, but havent had any issue with the NF, maybe more adjustment? Sold the gun to my moms boyfriend and he went and bought a Vortex for it and has the same issue, so have to change the base to a flat one or have a 300 yard zero. Wasnt a problem for me since I never shot under 500 meters.
Aside from that though, the scope was very nice for the money, id say untouchable under $1000 unless youre going against a SWFA SS or used scope of another brand, and very difficult to get zero stop, illumination, mil/mil etc for that price. BUT... since I use it in the desert mostly, I got nervous that it just wouldnt hold up like the NF and sold it for another NF. Ive only played with the HDs in a store or on my friends rifles, and they feel much better built, but price wise youre looking at the same price as NF. Customer service wise, the guys at NF are just as good as Vortex, although the one up Vortex has is no questions asked replacement, even if you send them back a pile of metal only slightly resembling a scope.

I dont think you can lose either way, just depends what you are going to do with the rifle. I talked my moms boyfriend into a Vortex for the reasons listed above, and because all he will be doing is bench rest shooting or light walking in the desert to get to a spot, and if it breaks, hes fine with a couple weeks down waiting for a repair/replacement. I wanted something built like a tank with great glass, features, and abilities, so I have NF now. On the upside too, if you run out of ammo, pull your NF off and you can likely beat at least 3-4 opponents to death with it, bolt it back on another rifle, and it will still hold zero and not have even a scratch on it :)
