I just received my kestrel 4000 and plan on using it with my JBM bullistics program. My question is do I need to adjust the altitude and barometric pressure zero points before every shooting trip or just once for the first time out or leave the zero points at zero?
What is the most consistent method for accurate JBM data read outs?

Thanks

Re: Got my new kestrel need some input/help

Leave the altitude adjustment for the pressure in the Kestrel set to zero, and enter the pressure in JBM as uncorrected (ie, "station") pressure.

That way you don't have to worry about altitude at all.

Re: Got my new kestrel need some input/help

(to clarify, it looks like in JBM you'd want to uncheck the "pressure is corrected" box since you'd be entering an absolute pressure -- they use the word "station" in the help description, so it could get a little confusing).

So on my iPad JBM it has pressure is absolute Is that what I want to turn on And leave the Kestrel barometric pressure zero points to zero and enter the barometric pressure as shown on the kestrel

If you turn the "Pressure is Absolute" to 'ON', then make sure your Kestrel displays "Ref 0 ft" on the BARO screen and your JBM software has 0 ft in the Altitude box.

That way your Kestrel is giving you the absolute (aka station) that JBM is expecting.

Alternatively, if you keep the "Pressure is Absolute" on 'OFF', then you need to make sure that the reference altitude on the Kestrel's BARO screen matches the Altitude value in JBM and that this value closely matches the actual altitude at your firing position for the computer to know the air density needed for the calculations.

In the end, if you only use the Kestrel for shooting, just stick with station pressure so you don't have to mess with matching altitude values.

Re: Got my new kestrel need some input/help

Also disable the Zero Atmosphere in Ballistic since you're zeroing @ 100. You don't need it and it just causes problems. Just use Current Atmosphere.

Re: Got my new kestrel need some input/help

Thanks for the help guys, I have it all set up and ready for a range trip for a test run.

Re: Got my new kestrel need some input/help

Let us know about your results. I have a 2500 and wonder about the same things. Confusing to dummies like me.

Re: Got my new kestrel need some input/help

The elevation of where you are standing at on the planet can be had from your Garmin, I simply use it to set the altitude in the Kestrel, I never touch the baro.

You are so right, since I don't know what the baro is but I do know what the altitude is where I'm standing I cal my Kestrel that way to give me correct DA

Ok guys, I know I am reviving an old thread but I still struggle with how to set up my kestrel. I don't understand the instructions as it relates to my apps, I usually use bullet flight that doesn't have DA available or shooter that does. Do I set my reference altitude on my kestrel to zero or what I am actually at, like 330 ft? Do I set the reference barometric pressure to what my local airport posts? Just trying to get an accurate DA so when I travel I can have a chance at correcting for conditions and compared to my home range. Any help would be appreciated.
