I have an FN PBR (controlled round feed type) with a hinged floorplate. I'm considering converting it to a CDI or FN removeable magazine setup.
Is it possible to load a round into the magazine, while it's installed in the rifle, as is the case with the fixed magazine?

No, not with single-feed style magazines like AICS and Alpha.

Double feed style can be topped off while inserted in the rifle. AW magazines are double feed.

Edit: I'm not sure if I answered the question you were trying to ask... you can still single load the rifle with an empty magazine installed. You can't snap the cartridge into the magazine, however.

Thanks. What bottom metal is compatable with AW magazines?

I like the idea of snapping the cartridge into the mag before closing the bolt. Seems to be some controversy as to whether or not it's ok to close the bolt on a loose round due to the extractor design.

That is one of the biggest draw backs of my FN SPR for me. The mags only hold 4 rounds and cannot be loaded while in the rifle. I have been throwing around the idea of selling my stock and getting a chassis system for the rifle since I would be out about the same amount of money as getting an aftermarket bottom metal and mags. I do however like the MM stock that it is in and kinda hate to sell it off.

I have never noticed a problem single feeding the rifle and closing the bolt on a loose round, pretty much all my work off a bench is done that way.

The CDI bottom metal will allow AW mags to latch in. They certainly won't feed right without some feed ramp grinding. I don't know if it can be made to work.

In regard to CRF and single loading:

With AI mags, Accurate mag copies of AI mags, and Alphas, dropping a single round onto the feed lips towards the rear will allow the cartridge to get "picked up" properly by the extractor and is good to go.

Putting a cartridge in the pipe, THEN closing the bolt down on it will force the extractor to snap over the rim...THATS where the controversy lies. I avoid it, but it's certainly happened before, and I don't sweat it. It's best practice to avoid it.
