I want to start the build right away I don't want to wait 8-10months I can wait like 2-3. but its going to be a 6.5 creedmoor with 26 or a 28in bbl with 1:8 twist. I'm going to do some competitions with it and some hunting please show pictures if you have one or the other

I just got in a defiance deviant a few weeks ago for a build, I liked it so much I ordered another already for my 338 lapua build. I got it in an about a month and a half... Surgeon isn't taking orders for actions anymore. I called them last week. They are so back logged it aint funny. So you can exclude that from your options.
all i have to say is I'm going to buy a deviant.. I saw this and now I'm set, looks like the actions is gonna run like glass. now I'm going to get the money together and buy it.
i just purchased a devient from bugholes...just waiting on shipping...like stated above i think it will be extremely hard and time consuming to find a surgeon...I was looking for one for a while.
Do all the Deviants have the straight fluting? Ive always thought straight looked the best, but heard they could run rough over the next round in the mag. Looks like the unfluted section at the rear of the bolt would alleviate any issues.
No, most I see are spiral flute.

You won't find a Surgeon, atleast not a new one.....not for a while anyway. Both are good actions. You don't seem to be very paitent from reading your post and in the custom rifle game nothing happens fast unless you have friends in the business.
yeah i'm kinda learning that the hard way.... impatient kid(me)+precision long range shooting=needs some work also kinda learning that when you don't got a job and want to spend big bucks that its not worth it so I may have to just true a 700 unfortunately...

Getting a action trued and printed is cheaper but buy the time u get done with a 3k + build what's another 400. Gl
I have a Deviant and that's they way i'd go. My brother maybe switching to a single shot so may have his repeater for sale soon if so ill let you know its meant with very few rounds fired. That's if you can't find new.

Building my first "high-end" action precision rifle after lurking the forums for years. I went with a Defiance Deviant, JAE-700, 24" threaded Bartlein M24, Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP, and Atlas Bipod. Looking forward to getting it all put together when the barrel gets back from Kampfeld Customs.
As for the Deviant action, it is by far the nicest action I have cycled in my career. Mind you we have always defaulted to FN or Steyr for our precision rifle needs. I'm excited and confident the Defiance will hold its own against these high end factory builds.

That Deviant is a nice looking action, first time I have seen one. I have a Defiance on my 260 and can see the Deviant looks different. Is it that much better?
Don't know if it is that much better, but the integral rail and recoil lug sold me.
Was that stock inletted for an R700?
Reason I ask, is in regard to the fitment between the ejection port, and the ejection port relief in the stock - and how they don't line up.

Besides the Defiance being precise and straight, one is resale value. You could blueprint/true up a 700, sink $350 into that on top of what you have in the 700 action and at the end of all that you are still stuck with a Rem 700 action that I wouldn't give $300 for.
well defiance actions are very smooth, have a nice finish on them and will last a good beating, the rem 700 aren't as tough, don't have a 1 piece bolt, integral rail/ lug, they also don't have the same rear tang, ejection port, bolt handle, and also don't have a smooth as glass bolt. rem 700 are good if you dont got 1,300 to spend on a action alone

I'm toying with the idea of building something in the near future and already decided I'd use a Custom action. Defiant is right here in Montana so I'd be donating to the local economy.

montana is a great state I've been there once and had a awesome time. We went fishing on the madison and fishing on a lake (can't remember which one), we also went sage rat hunting and we sat on a hillside for a whole day killing them things. it had beautiful landscape, and beautiful wildlife I'd love to own a nice big property there.

I loved living there (added: Montana) for nine years. Unfortunately, it was a bad time for logging and I spent most of that time broke. But, I still enjoyed it immensely, living there.

I have a Nesika, Glens old company, and think its a great action. It sits in a very accurate rifle to boot. I would buy another. I also live in Montana and love it here. Very gun friendly. Any time I'm bouncing around in the hills I have my shorty AR tucked in between me and the console ready to poke it out the window at a coyote, fox or anything else that needs to be dead...... It needs a can tho cause it barks with no plugs in. Beautiful state, come visit and whack some prairie dogs!

I plan on using a deviant for my next build. Mainly just because of the cool factor. Sure you can true up a 700 and get it to shoot. I have seen many trued 700's shoot one hole, but at some point cool factor comes into play. lets face it, a solid billet action is pretty sweet, not to mention the added bonus of being extremely accurate and smooth. Just my $0.02
If your just going to have one rifle, the fancy actions are really nice, but once you get bit by the bug, it is really hard to argue with a trued Remington and a nice top shelf barrel hanging off the front end, topped off with a nice scope. Going that route, I am now working on my 4th rifle in less than a year. Couple that with Chad's awesome group buy and I am building quite a nice quiver.
Of course I have one top shelf (Surgeon Scalpel) for bragging rights, but the rest are built on trued up Remington's that shoot just as good as the Surgeon does. Gathering parts for a 6CM right now, and that should hold me over for a while.
I will admit that the glass like smoothness of the Surgeon is a thing of beauty, and the integrated 20 MOA rail makes it awfully nice to look at.

I feel the Deviant is superior in design to the Surgeon 591. Most of the problems in the Surgeons are in the bolt. They keep very loose tolerances and that can be hell on bolt manipulation and feeding.

I have a Deviant being barreled as I type this. I will post pics of the build when I get it back. I like the deviant because I wanted a left hand action but I also wanted a right port. When asking Defiance they said "no problem, that what we do best". He was referring to make the action the way the costumer wants.
