Not much so far - we've got a LOT of work to do on it still, but here's one version of the teaser. The International version has different voice over by Russel Crowe...

    Re: Man of Steel

Hey how about when you're doing some CGI cityscape you add a shout out to SH in the graffiti on the wall... Like, "the Hide" over a doorway with a reticle LOL

    Re: Man of Steel

I do particle and fluid dynamics, not building models anymore, so there's no way in the pipeline for me to pull something like that off. I've done it in the past when it was easier to get away with it. There are some easter eggs in "The Day After Tomorrow" if you know where to look.

Yup, just came home to a package with reloading gear

Easter Eggs as in the term for hidden bits. In "The Day After Tomorrow" most of the people crossing the border into Mexico are CG people that we modeled after much of the VFX crew. There are also some teapots mixed in with ice buildup around NYC.

Back on "Speed 2", there's a cow in the debris flying through the air when the tanker explodes. Things like that are harder to do these days because the production will catch it and the studio will have you fired if they catch you. Ah well.

I still laugh when I see R2D2 float by in the last Star Trek.... I guess ILM gets a pass when it comes to Easter Eggs.

Looks epic. Idk why but that speech kevin costner gives, gives me chills. Really resonates with choices in life IMO. Anyhow i love the trailer. With two good directors/producers behind it it's looking great.

    Re: Man of Steel

Color me different but I still haven't decided whether I will see this movie or not. I thought Superman Returns was pretty good, not as good as the first two with Christopher Reeve, but certainly better than the last two. I'm frustrated with Hollyweird and it's constant revamping of the same thing over and over. The Hulk and Spiderman to name two. Three Hulk movies with three different actors (I include the Avengers in this). Spiderman with Tobey McGuire were three of the top grossing movies of the time, why remake it again. And don't get me started on the new Star Trek (blasphemy!). It would be nice to see more original ideas.

intriguing teaser....i believe i saw that at a movie recently. i think it may have been Brave

    +1

    Re: Man of Steel

I'm glad to see that Christopher Nolan is involved. If it's anywhere near as good as The Dark Knight trilogy we're in for a great time.

I have no problem with these new remakes taking a much darker tone. Makes for a much better and involving storyline.

    Re: Man of Steel

Yeah, it's been kind of a surprise for us as we've spent the better part of the year crunching through big chunks of the movie without getting an overall "feel" for it. The last few months were particularly difficult as many of us were pulling double-duty on this and "The Hobbit", trying to get it out the door as well as get shots ready for this trailer.

    Re: Man of Steel

Dogtown i just watched the hobbit trailer and it looks better than all three Lord Of The Rings so far IMO. Maybe i just have much more interest because it covers the dwarves somewhat.

    That trailer looks f'ing boss!
Michael Shannon as Zod, there's an under-rated actor. Stellar casting.
Here's to a good summer at the theaters, cheers!

Yeah, this one gave me goose bumps. Often when you work on films like this, it's a compartmentalized process and you don't get to see the whole film evolve and come together over time, which sometimes causes contextualized problems for everyone. Some filmmakers are pretty forward about giving us access to the rough cut in progress so we can see that context and others are more close hold about it. In this case, I was a bit indifferent to be honest, so I didn't really pay attention to what else was going on, just staying in my lane. But now that it's done and I'm seeing a broader picture of the film, I'm actually pretty excited about it.

If there were an Oscar category for trailers, this should get it. I don't even care how good the movie turns out. Those trailers are better than most movies!

    Some new TV spots....

Well, it's all surprisingly secretive while in production, but after the film comes out it's pretty open. Our equivalent of the SHOT show is SIGGRAPH and spending wandering the floor, checking out the booths of the different VFX facilities, you get to see a lot of behind the scenes kind of stuff. The conference itself would be boring to someone outside of the industry but I think anyone off the street can pay $50 for an exhibits pass. There are also Visual Effects Society events in the cities where our industry is mostly concentrated (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver, London, Wellington (NZ), Sydney but you generally have to be a member (kind of like SAG) or you just know someone and get to tag along as a guest. Other than that, you can see a lot of the same kinds of behind the scenes stuff, albeit without much of the nerdy details ("so we used an smoothed particle hydrodynamics solver to simulate the flow of water along the surface of the ship, then voxelized the point cloud into a proper levelset that was surfaced with a water shader that accurately simulated the sub-surface scattering of light inside the volume with proper fresnel falloff of the ray bounces, all way interacting with a rigid body sim of debris...") by watching videos posted on YouTube by the VFX facilities or watching the DVD extras.

Saw the Man of Steel trailer in 3D while at Star Trek, it looked visually stunning. The also had WWZ trailer in 3D and it looked terrible and almost caused a headache. Dog, do you have any insight on this.

There are a lot of different ways to do 3D these days. With "Man of Steel", we did everything like a normal 2D 24fps film and the 3D stereo conversion was handled by an outside specialist company. This kind of post-conversion can really be a mixed bag depending on so many factors, but if done well it can be a less involved method of making a stereo film, though it'll never achieve the same level of immersion you get with a film that's made from the ground-up in stereo like "Avatar", "Life of Pi" and "The Hobbit." But that heavily integrated pipeline is really expensive and can create lots of difficult problems to solve.

The post-conversion method is very labor intensive but not as difficult. It involves having an army of 2D artists and technicians cutting out objects in the shot and moving them into Z-space (ie camera depth). The downside is that you're essentially working with a photograph, so you have a limited amount of information to work with whereas a full 3D stereoscopic shot is literally a perfect view for each eye, so there's proper parallax from the camera to infinity. The post-conversion artists have to fake this and when it's done well it's pretty convincing, but when it's done poorly it'll give you a headache.

The two most common reasons for headache inducing stereo conversions are budget and time. Some films are rushed to the theaters and they don't give the proper budget and schedule to the conversion so it gets completed but not to high quality. Also there are sometimes cases where it's decided at the last minute to do a 3D conversion, so again there's not enough time to do it properly - this was the case a few years ago with "Clash of the Titans", with the decision to do a stereo conversion literally a couple months before it was scheduled to be released in theaters because "Avatar" had just killed the box office.

ETA: For the record, it was decided that "Man of Steel" would be a stereo film back in mid-2012, so my guess is that the conversion is top-notch.

That's movie making for you - a very expensive gamble. That's one of the reasons why we see lots of sequels and remakes these days as the movie studios try to hedge their bets as much as possible.

It's not all roses and chocolate though - we work a lot of long hours often 7 days a week to get these films done. In many ways getting into this industry was more difficult for me than passing Selection. While I don't wear a ruck all day and night and subsist on one meal a day, my high school educated brain gets a serious workout daily. And just like I experienced in the Army, "selection is a never ending process" here in the VFX world. At the top studios you can get RFSd pretty fast and while being the older more experienced type gives you certain advantages, there's a constant stream of young college graduates chomping at the bit to get my job, willing to work harder for longer hours for less pay. But at the same time, the guys who do this work, including me, are in many ways those kids who saw "Star Wars" and wanted to work on movies and/or saw "Tron" and wanted to learn computer graphics. A few of us just took a detour at some point and had a military career first.

And another trailer...this time you get a good shot of the Black Zero.

    Here's a spoiler...

Superman's father is really Robin Hood.

Here's a new one...and finally shows a lot of the shots I was working on this time last year.

That's been known to happen...knowing what I know from working on the film, I'm optimistic though.

Anybody else catching the midnight showing tomorrow? Can't wait! Heard there was a Batman tie in, possibly setting up a Justice League movie.

    J.

I think they said the tie to Dark Knight was just a Satellite in Space Superman passes that says "Wayne Enterprises" ...

Goyer said the Dark Knight films do not exist in this universe, but Wayne, does. So they are setting up an entirely new Batman tie in... Most of what I read said the Justice League won't happen until after the Man of Steel sequel.
