I’m considering doing a custom rifle build. I could use some suggestion because I’m not sure what I want.

I currently have a Howa 1500 in 308 Win. I love the rifle and have been able to get clover leaf groups at 100yards when I do my part. I have learned a lot from all the things I've done to it to improve it.

I’m thinking about a long action rifle now but, not sure what caliber especially since some reloading items are getting hard to find.

I agree with what some say that it’s better to start with a quality action compared to spending the same amount of money trying to get a lower end action to the same specs.

Can you make a recommendation?

I would read into Surgeon, Stiller and Defiance actions. As for a caliber in long action, the options are nearly limitless. If you share the details on how you plan to use the rifle (F-Class, Tactical Competition, Hunting, ect.) I can provide some good calliber options.

well I would say it depends on what type of shooting you plan on doing. there are a lot of posts about actions being off the shelf or custom. it depends on the gunsmith in my opinion. one example is I had a nearby
gunsmith build me a rifle in .308 using a rem 700 action, I don't remember the exact price but the action was around 400 bucks and another 1800-1900 for the work and it shoots like a laser.

I prefer a short action because of the bolt throw being a bit shorter, but I have rarely shot passed a thousand and don't really need a bigger cartridge for the type of shooting I do.

Ya you need to think about exactly what you want to do first. That will narrow down calibers best suited
