Today I was able to stretch the legs on my 10 PC out to 1200. I was happy as hell with it. I started with a Litz solution on Shooter and was 4 mils high. Switched to a standard G1 and it was right on. Used a Kestrel for my data and it was a bit windy, 8-15 mph full value from the left. Wound up with 13.7 up and 3 left often holding an additional two depending on gusts.

Load: MAX FOR MY RIFLE
LC MG brass fully prepped and SB sized.
178 AMAX .015 off lands at 2.830
45 grains of Varget
Wolf SLR primers
2673fps with a SD of 9

For fun I tried some 168 GMM and that was a disaster (knew it would be). About like indirect fire without the boom.

what rifle , twist and barrel length are you running? I am interested in seeing how far I can push my 20" 1 in 10 rem.

Yup they will make the trip. I shot them out to 1300 at the ASC match at about 2700fps at 3500 feet ASL. Try some Hornady 178 BTHPs. They have a .530 BC.

I have always used the standard G1s with all my rounds in multiple calibers through JBM and been right on. Never seen the need for the G7. The G1 works for me.

Thanks for the Data. I've always wanted to try my 308 at 1K.
I noticed JBM says 11.3 mils for G1 or Litz. Your data says 13.7
I wonder what the diff is? Zero at 100 or 200. Altitude?

He's shooting at 1200, not 1000. That'll probably get you the extra 2.5 mils.

I will be shooting Hornady 178 bthp at the ASC this May. I'm looking forward to it. I'm using Federal brass, cci #200, 49.9 grn of varget and they are flying at 2704 fps. I can't wait!

What's the trick to getting this much Varget in the case and still being able to get consistant seating depths every round?

It's easy with Winchester cases. With others use a 4" drop tube. Settles the powder better.

I'm using a 4" drop tube and pouring the powder in very slowly to let it settle. I can get 47-47.4, but this is with Lapua brass. Anything more and seating depth goes to hell.

***With 155 Hybrids.

47grns is the Hodgdon listed max with a 155 so I think you are doing pretty well. ;) It's also listed as a compressed load.

Lapua brass does have less internal capacity but you should be getting good velocity with that max load as most I know only use around 44grns with the 178s in Lapua brass versus closer to 45grns with Winchester.

Nothing really. I did the ocw test to find the load, just watch for pressure sign during the ocw and you are good to go. Been reloading with this set up for two years and all the lots are right on. I do an ocw with different powder lots and the last time there was only .1 powder change which is basically nothing.

What do you guys think about the Amax 178? Just starting to work up a new load for my tac ops and looking for some suggestions.

I'm a factory ammo shooter and was really shocked when I ran JBM for the HOrnandy Superperformance. Haven't gotten a chance to run it through a chronograph yet but am excited that 2700fps with a 178gr HPBT streches the .308 to 1200 without issue.

The 178 AMAX has been very accurate for me. I usually shoot 175 SMK's. but every time I shoot the AMAX, they are awesome.
We shot the 175SMK and I found a box of 180SST's that we stretched to 1,200 yards. Your 1,200 goal is very realistic.

I'm absolutely loving the 178gr A-max. Loaded with 44.5 gr of imr 4064 I'm getting an average of 2707 fps. I take it out to 1200yds with my 20" TRG 22 with little effort. Coming from using the 175 gr smk for years I can say that I am thoroughly impressed with the A-max and will not be returning to the smk anytime soon. I just bought 500 178 gr hpbt's so I'm excited to give these a run as well. The only hiccup I've had running hornady projectiles is the availability. They've gotten very hard to find!

Did the same thing with my 10 FLCP-K with 168 amax pills. Just shooting at a small dirt mound but was over all pretty happy! It's fun to push a .308 past what most people think is possible.
