I am going to participate in the group buy accurizing deal with Chad Dixon, and I'm working on getting everything I need together. I'm planning on running a .243 barreled action through Chad's process. I will use a Rem 700 short action and a Bartlien 6mm x 5R x 28" finished, .237/.243 bore, groove x 1-7.5 twist, Taper barrel.
I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this question, so I guess I'm really looking more for confirmation. I know that the size of the bolt face for a .308 Win is the same as the one needed for a .243 Win (.473). So the bolt in a .308 action can be used in a .243 action. (both short actions). Because I am using a different barrel than the one that will come with the Rem 700 SPS that I buy for the action, I can buy either a Rem 700 SPS .243 rifle or a Rem 700 SPS .308 rifle, and I will be able to use either action for my .243 build. Is that correct? I've already bought the barrel, and I'm about to buy the Rem 700. The barrel is stainless, so i'm going to look for a stainless action, but that's not a necessity because I can have it cerakoted to the color of the Manners T5.
Some extra info just because...I've never owned a .243, but I grew up shooting deer with my dad's so this should be fun. I'm relatively new to long range shooting, but I've been around guns and hunting my entire life. I "think" I know how to shoot, but I know I have a lot to learn if I want to improve. I'm currently shooting a Rem 700 5R .308, but it would be nice to have a smaller caliber. The recoil doesn't bother me all that much, but it does effect what I'm doing after awhile. I also have a .338 LM that I bought on the hide last week that I have no business even looking at until I get the fundamentals down very well with a smaller caliber. Hence the .243. I plan on shooting 115 gr and taking it out to 600 yards. Get proficient at 600 yards with the .243, reading the wind, calculating wind adjustments, familiarizing myself with come ups and holdovers, and all that.
