Okay, so here it goes. I have decided to take the plunge again, and Want accuracy international rifle to add to my collection. This'll be my first AI rifle, so I have some questions... Does anyone own a AE mkiii, and an AW, or AX? Will I get a significant increase in performance if I select one of the upper two models over the AE?

Please don't include any comments and saving money and select a different rifle.

I have shot several AE's, and can tell you that they deliver the goods. I have an AW in 338 Lapua, and it delivers as well. If I was you, I'd get behind some AI's and see for yourself. J
 
They will all shoot the same pretty much... I have an AE MKIII and it will shoot better than most shooters... Or I guess what i'm saying is if you miss it's your fault.... GL
 
The AE Mark II or Mark III are excellent rifles.

The AW or AX do offer some advantages

Shorter double stack magazines: The Magazines for the AW and AX are double stacked magazines and so they are a lot faster to load, as well as shorter for prone shooting & you can load through the ejection port if needed.

The bolt is a little bit smoother on the AW and AX as it's a bit easier to strip rounds out of the double stacked magazines.

The AW and AX will stand up to a bit more ruggedness than the AE, but in reality I doubt hardly anyone ever finds the limits of either one.

As far as accuracy goes, both are pretty much about the same excellent accuracy.

had a AE, now have a AW and AX. AE is a excellent weapon and especially with the newest AE having the same bolt as a AW its damn near the same weapon minus the double stack mags and barrel swapping procedure. if you have the money the top of the line AI's are amazing but i take nothing away from its less expensive brother for a guy on a "budget" but still wanting a hard use factory gun the AE is pretty hard to beat.

getting a new barrel screwed on. They are tanks and sure as hell ain't light but damn are they nice guns.

Will you be using the rifle in inclement weather? Such as sub zero temperatures? Excessive dirt and dust? Will you potentially be dropping or otherwise roughly handling the system?

Unless your answer to the above is yes, and the usage thereof would be outside the realms of what any other gun would be subjected to, you'll do fine with the AE.

Unless of course you want a larger caliber, in which case AW/AX is your only choice.

I have not observed a difference in performance/accuracy from AE to AW.

I would go far to say my current AE is more accurate than the L96A1.
 
this is mine mkII, the only considreable difference with aw is the bonded action (that does not affect the accuracy), bolt is the same, chassis the same,trigger the same,barrel the same (here in europe, are lothar or border) ... accuracy ... the same ;)

Read the OP.......you've missed the key phrase!!



Whether you choose the AE, AW or AX....you'll never be disappointed. Had my AW for 7 years or more. never regretted the choice (or the cost!) for one minute...simply the best money I've ever spent on a firearm.

My AE mk II shot better then my AW did with factory barrel. I had to get Gap to cut me a BArtlein to get similar results. You are not missing anything with a MKIII unless you like the style of the AX. My AX trigger seems nicer then any other AI I have used.
 
My AX gets here Wednesday, then a 24hr waiting period :(. Won't get to shoot her until Sunday, but where to go? Hmmm only 200 yard public range available. Northern IL is not so friendly.... Looks like I have to join Young's in Indiana.
 
Even though you have 200 yards only, you can practice hitting a quarter @200 yards and consistent and your good to go.. Good choice for rifle and have fun..

Yeah, i just traded my DTA SRS kit for a AIAW with quick butt, quick cheek, and butt spike in .260 and couldnt be happier. Next step, PSR.

I assume you mean: "I wouldn't trade this AE MKIII for anything other than a AIAW" unless you think the AIAW is the worst rifle out there.

damn I need to proof read before posting.......

the action wrench I got from a guy who makes them here on the hide, can't remember his name but a quick search of badger action wrench or AI action wrench will do the trick, barrel vise from brownells, torque wrench for Home Depot and go/no go gauges from PTG
 
I tried to improve, change, modify my AI AW .308 but came right back to the way it came. The thumb hole stock works just fine for me. I have a problem in that I find myself comparing my other rifles to the AI AW. Its costing me money. I now have to have Geissele triggers in my a.r. rifles, LMT, La Rue. I find myself putting spare S&B scopes on them to try to bring up to AI AW level. EVERY TIME I go to the range with the AW I come back home satisfied. I never use to try very hard to be real accurate before the A.W. I knew the equipment was holding me back. I'm not the best shot on the block but to watch the vapor trail on the way to the target and see the best groups I have ever shot is quite a thrill. I put a S&B 5-25 scope on and can see holes at 200 yards, the longest we have at the range I belong to. I let most anyone at the range shoot it if they ask. Most have a smile afterwards.
 
I love my AIAE, I was going to buy a second one in a .243 but decided to try a custom action instead. While the custom shoots great and the trigger is better, there is just something about the AI that has me thinking about selling the custom and getting the AI.
 
When I priced the AX, I was given an option for quick adjustable cheek piece and butt end. It was almost a grand more so I settled for the older style screw adjust pieces since I am going to adjust once and leave it alone. Is this the same mindset of other AX buyers?
