Guess some were true?

Always rumors and whispers. Men who got discharged and stayed in the highlands. Men who stayed with the Montanyards. Hell, our guys were running into Frenchmen who stayed. The whole area into Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam was a vast wilderness unaccessable by road. Who knows. Interesting stories. When I was on active duty in the early eighties, I met a guy who stayed and walked out after Saigon fell, the mission wasn't described in detail but he was decorated enough to be believeable. He was an E-7 so it made sense to me.

Sad in some ways though. Declassified stuff is always interesting.

holy crap, did anybody read the comments below the article?

If you have ever fought in a war like Vietnam.....you can never let it go. It stays with you. I came home but a big part of me is still over there. 173rd ABN - 1965-1968.

How many war crimes did you commit or turn the other way on? How did you rationalize your racism and being manipulated to fight a war based on false premises (Maddax lie)? Do you want other young people to do the same now? Do you have any material you snuck out of the military and keep in a secret place?

This looks like an interesting documentary and I'd like to watch it. I remember reading an article, probably 25 years ago, about rumors that some Americans had actually deserted and fought with the Viet Cong, as a result the subject of American's staying in Vietnam voluntarily has always interested me.

Here is some interesting gouge:
Deserters

people like that piss me off something fierce, that Treacherous Whore (who, btw, Can't Understand Normal Thinking) and her ilk are still sitting around forty years later either acting like it wasn't a big deal (what they did to Vietnam Vets), or continuing to do so with impunity because they are "progressive" and "Fought for our freedoms". I hope wherever Godless Heathen Whores go after they die, that there will be a few very angry and very creative Real Americans waiting for her.

Now that I've voiced my opinion of The Evil B-Word...

This article was interesting, it leads me to wonder, if what he says is true, how he lost his mother language. Perhaps trauma during his journey? My Great Grandfather spoke perfect french despite living in America for 50 years... but then again, he did speak french with his family.

Maybe it was old age, or maybe this instance proves that you can forget how to ride a bike?

either way, thanks for the link.

btw mustang, that article on deserters is fascinating

It's very common to forget how to speak your native language when you don't use it for a few decades. My grandmother was born in Romania, she moved to this country and learned English, later in life she could only remember a few words of Romanian. Also sounds like this guy has Alzheimers or dementia.

Like Gunfighter,I heard stories. Besides the well known POW/MIA heart breakers, there were a few stories about the Saigon commandos. Some just druggies, some run of the mill deserters, others stayed on to run very lucrative businesses. Some also returned to wear civilian clothes,do interesting things, swell Swiss bank accounts, and mostly play by different rules. ( all strictly hearsay of course ) This is the first I ever heard of a snake eater going plumb native though. Sure hope he found tranquility.

Very interesting, I also love reading about the Japanese troops who fought for 10+ years after WWII.

Saw an article a couple months ago about a Russian vet from the Afghanistan war that stayed in Afghanistan after being seriously wounded and MIA. Had only been 25 years or so and he basically had no ability to speak Russian anymore.
