Remington 700's are hard to find in my area. Local gun shops seem to have loads of Savage Axis, Howas, some Tikkas, boatloads of the Ruger American and Remington 720's or some other Rem action. I bought a long action 700 with a scope for $417.00 at Wallyworld. The bolt cosmetics are poor, finish is adequate, plastic stock is garbage, the scope is rubbish, but both sold quickly at a local gunshow for $50.00 and I still have to sell the rings and mounts - every little bit offsets the cost. The X trigger in not adjustable so it has to go too. I don't expect all that much for $417 dollars, but it was a usable hunting rifle that would have been adequate at 150 yards with say 150 grain Federal Deer Thumpers or whatever is in hunting vogue these days. I shot it, it printed ok with some mil rounds to get it on paper and some factory hunting rounds. 2 inches off a bag at 100 yards.

That 700 - I got a stock here from the Hide, is now sitting at a smith waiting on a 6.5 barrel, action true and a Timney. So about $1100 later it will be a fair gun.

I mean at $417 bucks complete, it is cheaper than buying the action.....It makes a fair project gun. I think the stock is the biggest part of POS in the particular 700. I can't tell if the barrel shoots well enough to keep it b/c the stock is touching everywhere and it flexes. One of em might make a decent hunting rifle with a decent stock and a fair trigger - but it is hard to tell. I know Remington makes all kinds of "grades" and variations of the 700, but I have seen two in the last couple years - the plastic pos and a shiny wood anniversary model with black tip forend/express sights at close to $900 and nothing in between.

I had an Axis, it isn't a bad gun, once I put a Rifle Basix trigger in it, it started shooting fine. Lightweight, cheap beater gun. Better cosmetics than the 700. I am not fond of the American. No aftermarket that I can see. With that being said, what are these 700's? I see Remington is coming out with some new stuff for competition against the Axis and American - what is wrong with the 700 - Nothing, so they got to save some money? Does this mean the $417 Remington 700 will be closing out?

I bought a .223 package deal like that 2 months ago. Just to clarify, the X trigger IS adjustable. They put some glue in the allen heads so it looks like they can't be. I adjusted mine down to 1-3/4 lbs. with no issues and resealed the screws. Had my smith re-barrel it .223. Trued action, bolt all trued up and lapped and throated for 80 Bergers. Will be picking it up Friday and load testing next week. Cerakote made all the "ugly" finish go away. I paid the same $417 you did. Scope was garbage 4-12x. could get a clear image at any distance. It did shoot my 40 gr. V-max load at just slightly over 1" for 5 shots. But I only put 20 rounds down it before tearing it down. Removed parts will be gone to the gun show in 2 weeks. Hope Your new stick comes out great, I'm jonesing to head out with mine.

Am I the only one who read the subject and expected to see a sniper from the Red Roof Inn with a circa 1980s Rem700? I guess you have to be Army with some tabs to get that ;)

I like mine. .308 shoots .5" or better, it can, I can't. Changed stocks, of course. The same exact action and barrel which is put on any other Rem varmint rifle, etc.

I'm using a similar set up as a project/learning rifle. The stock certainly sucks, and the sporter profile barrel doesn't help, either. First up is going to be a decent stock that won't flex, and some new glass. I figure by the time the barrel is ready to be replaced I will ready to take advantage of a better one.

But, for the price it sends rounds downrange. And I can find ammo for it, until powder/primers start to flow again so I can reload.

I picked up the same rifle at Sportsmans Warehouse in 243. Cheap scope, cheap rings, cheap bases, cheap stock. Gave the scope to my son for his 22lr about all it is good for and he is not as discerning as I am...), sell the barrel to someone who needs it but does not want to pay $$$ for custom, scope mounts to a friend for his set up. In it around $350 now.

Trigger has not been touched, and breaks pretty nicely at 4.25 pounds.

The action is not "bad" with all wibbly-wobbly threads. Needs a little truing, but nothing horrendous. Trigger will be replaced with a Timney 510 eventually. Ordering a Shilen Select Match in 8 twist for subsonic loads. Going to be a short ranch/tactical rifle, capable of shooting 175s at supersonic, 220s at subsonic.

Will post pics eventually.

I say buy one. They are not terrible rifles, just not superb out of the box.

Well for my new LA build (Ain't decided on caliber yet), I picked up a 700 for $150. Sold the stock and old style trigger for $70 which left $80 for my action. Sent it to Longrifles Inc and had it completely trued and am now ready to order a bbl and get started. I buy any 700 I can pick up right. Always pays to keep a few rattholed!
