Question...I have a cheap wind meter here and was thinking of upgrading to a Kestral to help work out firing solutions. What can a Kestral do for me that a decent $150. adventurer watch and my cheap wind meter can't? The watch would be much more compact and accessable through the day to monitor changing air preasure/temp/humidity than the Kestral I would think. And the cheapo wind meter lets you know what the wind is doing where you are at the time. None of them let you know what the wind is doing down town so once you get a "feel" for the wind where your at the cheapo can stay in the bag most of the time as well. If my thinking is reasonably sound let me know....If I am missing the mark please school me a bit. Thank's for the input.......Man I blew the spelling in the title...

The Kestrel unit does two things for you in comparison. First, it's an all in one unit that computes your density altitude for you versus taking the readings and matching them against a chart. Most watch units don't compute humidity and while it's only a minor player in shooting and DA computation, it's still a player. Second, your watch when on your wrist will not give you an accurate temperature reading due to body heat transfer. You have to remove it and keep it in open air for about 15 minutes to get an accurate reading.

I've done exactly what you're talking about doing, and while it's good enough when you're in the field and have an FDAC or similar slide rule, it's still less than ideal in my opinion for more accurate shots at long range. I shifted over to a Kestrel and won't look back.

I had an adventure watch from Casio. Tried it for a few days and I found it to be extremely unreliable and inaccurate. The other thing I did not care for was the complicated use of the different menus and screens. I think it would take someone with a college degree to understand the manual it might have been small but it was damn near an inch thick. I returned it and bought a kestrel, that would be my suggestion.
