right now i have a bell and Carlson adjustable tactical stock on my rem 700 308. the rifle shoots with the best of them. the problem is, it is so damn heavy. when i was at the NRA convention i held a few mcmillans that were amazingly light. which stock would yall recommend for a tactical/hunting setup? and how much more heavier is the adjustable cheek compared to the classic? i am not limited to just mcmillan but i am even considering spending Accuracy International money. thank you

I have a McMillan A5 w/edge tech. that I just received that came in at 2.25#. Should make for a great hunting stock for long range shooting.

Regards,
Paul

I'm running non adjustable, regular fill McMillan HTG's on a couple of my multipurpose (but more hunting than target shooting) rifles. They are relatively light but aren't the lightest stocks around. In my opinion they have just the right amount of weight to balance out a 20-24" Remington varmint contour barreled rig nicely.

IIRC, the adjustable cheek piece adds about a lb to the weight of the stock.

A non A series McMillan with Edge fill or a Manners with Carbon Fiber option will be the lightest available stocks. Although, there are some specialized makers that offer stocks for mountain rifles. I am not familiar enough with them to give you any names.

Next item to look at is the barrel. That is where most of the weight hides.

Manners SL stock, Manners Elite Hunter, any other manners with 90% CF option. I believe those are listed lightest to heaviest.

I have only used Manners stocks and will probably continue to only use them.

And as lonely_wolf said, a lot of your weight is in the barrel. Either chop the length or get a smaller profile...or both like me.

thanks for the suggestions. it is a heavy barrel but its only 18 inches. i will look into the manners. i seem to really like the feel of the tactical rifles i have shot over the years. i wish i could get behind a few of these and see which one fits me best
