I'm wanting to do a budget build off a Stevens model short action gun. Here is my plan; buy it in 22/250 then swap to a match grade .243Win or some other 6mm barrell and hand load for that exclusively. Is it true that 22/250 is SA and would the bolt face be same as .243win? I've read some awesome things about capabilities of .243 and 6mm bullets are super easy to get ahold of around here.

Anybody have input of proven budget Stevens builds?not sure on what brand Barrell yet...and I'm not sure what stock yet. I'm thinking McMillan, Manners, or maybe even that McCrees chassis(not sure on mcrees)....

One other thing anybody know what's required to do chambering like 243WSSM? What's the deal on the 6normabr?

I just sold an AR To fund this. For some reason I like bolt guns way way more.

Yes, 22/250 uses the same .473 bolt head as a 243 (or 6BR, or 260, or 308, etc). Even if it didn't, with a Savage you can swap bolt heads in a matter of minutes.

The man to call for Savage barrels is Jim Briggs @ Northland Shooters Supply; he can get you fixed up with a Criterion or Shilen. You can find basic info about him on the SavageShooters website. For the barrel swap, you'll need AT VERY MINIMUM a barrel nut wrench, 1lb hand sledge or dead blow hammer, shop vise with notched wooden blocks, a Go-Gauge and some scotch tape. Plenty of Youtube videos out there on how to safely do it.

A McGowen prefit via GunShack is another option, or buy McGowen directly through their new McGowenOutlet website.

Stock? Jump on that Manners T2 that's in the classifieds here, buy a CDI DBM and some magazines, and bolt it together...done. I previously owned a T2, currently own two McMillan A5s, both are great options. For a "budget" stock, hard to beat the Bell & Carlson A2 Medalist (though the fore end ergonomics blow).

I like Savage, but be warned that a Savage "build" has LITTLE resale value. It's hard to even give them away.

Just consider this before spending a bunch of money building one.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I don't have plans of selling this one, I just want the satisfaction of having something I didn't buy "off the shelf". I've always been intrigued by "built guns", and Savages seem rather easy to do. My other savage shoots ridiculously well I'm hoping that it isn't a fluke.

I feel that you can build a relatively good rifle on a budget. I did quite a few this past year. They all shoot excellent.

The Criterion barrels are also excellent values, and beautiful. If you really want to trick it out buy a PTG Fluted Bolt Body, and a PTG bolt head, if you really want to go all the way with it. Rifle Basix makes a very nice trigger called the SAV2. The Choate Tactical stock is a little heavy but a great value at about $190. Instead of a Stevens, if you don't already have it, buy a Savage with detachable bottom metal, will fit right in the choate stock. The edge and the axis won't fit, or without modifications. The resale of that is no problem, just check Savageshooters.com, but you will get more money when you part out though.

I got the donor gun. The action measures 4.4 inches. Does this make it a "centerfeed" action? I'm wanting to order a stock and the differences between the 10 and this steven action are what? Are both 4.4" pillar spacing? Wow, I had no idea stocks weren't available anywhere either! Their easy to find instock as Varget right now.

Any instock online retailers for savage SA 4.4" actions?

4.4" action screw spacing is center feed.

The only difference between the Savage and Stevens action is the name engraved in it.

Any 4.4" savage stock will work. Savage triggers interchange.

"Shank" on savages refers to diameter of the barrel tennon, the end that threads into the receiver.

Your 12LRP is a large shank.

The model 10 and Stevens are small shank.

The barrel I linked to is the "heavy bull", the fattest contour CBI offers. Its fat... ~1" diameter at the muzzle.

I built a 243 off a Steven 200 (Small Shank) in 308 with 4.4 spacing. Had Fred from SSS do the action work, chamber a Douglas Heavy Varmint 1/8, time muzzle brake as well as add their competition trigger. The only difficult part was the wait with SSS and the trigger. The SSS trigger apparently will not drop into a Mcreese chassis ( without some modification) and the aftermarket stocks are not as easy to find as say a Remington 700 stock. I settled on a Bobby Hart from Stockys because it was in stock and worked for what I needed ( fun gun/long range ground hogs) even though I wanted a B&C medalist. This stock required a new set of pillars, screws and a trigger gaurd so keep that in mind. Even with the pain that finding a stock was I am happy, my 243 will shoot around 1/3 off bipods and a rear bag with Copper creek 105's...a few 1/4 moa groups when all the planets are in a row and I stop at three shots haha. With that said I live on the east coast with shots rarely over 500-600 yards so when this barrel burns out it will become a 6br or variant for longer barrel life.

Get the criterion and don't look back. They have had 16 week waits for barrels lately, so if you can buy one now do it.

Try Stocky's and see what the have on the shelf for Savages. Savageshooters has had wealth of info for me. Good source of parts too (for paid members)

Ok, I've finally decided on the Chambering to put infront of this Stevens action. I'm gonna go with 6BR. Maybe I'll make it a single shot, as I've read some issues with the cartridge design feeding effectively as a repeater. I was inbetween 243, 6br, and 243wssm but have decided on the 6br as it seems really really easy on barrels compared to 243win.. and relatively easy to load for. Should be a fine cartridge for whacking crows and groundhogs as well. I'll be making the phone call to Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply, (763) 682-4296 tommorow and get a 6br on order.

Changed it up again; I have a .243 1/8 twist Criterion w/ a bit longer throat, a Briggs recoil lug, and the tools enroute. I should be piecing it together by the end of next week! It's shipping out tommorow. Awesome attitude and over the phone customer service from Jim at NSA. Can't wait to turn this pile into a shooter:

Here she is. Just saving up for a 20moa and budget glass. I headspaced it last night with clymers gauges. It turned out nice looking. Can't wait to shoot her in a few weeks. I'm going to fab some sort of single shot bottom metal plate insert for now as its cut for a CDI kit.
