Im looking for an AR-15 in .308, for about $1000 or bit more does any one have any ideas on where I can get one, that is also very durable?

They seen to be going for 1100-1300 for DPMS and Bushmaster Have seen some DPMS for 1000 Only place I have seen any is on GB I have been after one for several months. And GB is the only place The other AR 's are going for 1400+

wal-mart has dpms lr 308 rifles for around 900.00 . I have a rock river 308 and it is a tack driver just be prepared to buy fn-fal magazines or rock rivers own polymer mags.

The .308 AR platform isn't standardized like the AR15 is, so you're looking at a range of rifles that are similar in design but partially or completely incompatible in their parts. So your ability to upgrade later is more limited, and you're basically buying a proprietary design that may have limited parts options, instead of a military-based design with dozens or 100's of parts options.

For $1k or less you're looking at the DPMS and not much else. It's actually a pretty good rifle as long as you don't expect "mil spec" type details (barrel steel, testing, etc.). Compare it to other semiautos that aren't derived from a military design and it's a good rifle and relatively modular.

Step up the price a little and you have options from Armalite, RRA, and S&W, with S&W being the newest by far. It may also be the best quality wise but that isn't proven yet. If you want to shoot tiny groups at a bench, DPMS and RRA have better affordable free floated options.

Go up towards $2200+ and you get some additional nice options like the Colt 901, LMT MWS, and Larue 7.62 rifles. I'm guessing this is outside of what you want to spend.

I have the Smith and Wesson M&P10 (308) and a Black Rain Ordinance 308. For the $ the smith is one great rifle. I have the smith set up as a mid range and the BRO set up as the long range. I have a feeling that the smith might actually be more accurate. I only have a 1-4 power on it and a 4-16 on the bro. I might swap the optics and see what one shoots better groups at 300 yards.
My vote for the price range is the M&P10.

I like the Armalite AR10A (the one that takes PMags) if it's my first rifle. Will run about $1300. Armalite uppers and lowers are high quality, 7075 Forged Aluminum. This rifle can always be upgraded later one part at a time. Aramalite upper to lower fit is super tight and there is no better combo of upper and lower out there.

The Armalite AR10B was my first 308-AR. All the parts of that original rifle is now replaced except the
1) upper
2) lower
3) BCG-group
4) buffer tube and spring
5) gas block
6) LPK minus the trigger.
7) 2 magazines

Keep in mind, these 7 parts will run you about $1000 alone, so that extra $300 you pay for a complete rifle to play with while you "build it up" will be quite a bargain!

My Rifle went from this:

To this in about 5 years (last thing replaced was the barrel just this year):

Remington actually made a rifle in 30 Remington that is the size of a AR-15. DPMS made the rifle with Remington's name on it. It would launch the 308 caliber bullets in the 125 grain range around 2800 FPS. Getting kind of hard to find.

i didnt think you could get a new ar-10 for a grand.. specially these days. i just paid through the nose for my pof p308. 2700.00

I've had the DPMS LR308(I think that was the model?) with a 20 or 24" bull barrel. It shot just under an inch (.9'ish) with factory ammo. If you get a DPMS, start saving for an aftermarket trigger. I think I had the JP Ent trigger in it, and that's when I got the groups under an inch. I don't know that you can get the rifle for under $1000 right now though. That's what I would look at in that price range. But if you could bump it up a little, the Armalite would likely be a better option. I've never had one of those, but hear good things.

Centerfire Ammunition - Rifle Ammunition - 30 Remington AR

Yeah, it basically flopped. The performance was only marginally more than a 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC load, especially if you used apples to apples barrel lengths (the 30 Rem AR was based on a 24" barrel, while most 6.8 SPC ballistics you see are measured in a 16" barrel). But the case is super fat and loaded into magazines in a single stack, so very little magazine capacity, and of course it's hard to find the ammo since only Remington made it. You don't want one.

I think you could build one yourself for around $1200. I just built one using a Mega MATEN billet upper/lower, DPMS SASS .308 barrel and DPMS .308 complete BCG for $1,011 (just added up the receipts). Again, if you're not in a hurry, I think you could build it yourself for $1200 (including the LPK, stock, etc.).
