Well looking to move down south agine u guys from north and south carolina what's the work like down there, how's the laws on carry and basic firearm laws thanks gunny, any one need a fly catcher on a dump truck.

I live in the Charlotte area, NC has some of the best gun laws in the country. Open carry, Concealed Carry Permits, Suppressor friendly ( I can't remember if you can hunt with them yet). However the liberal ass Char/Meck police chief won't sign off on anything, luckily I live in Union county and our Sheriff is a good ole boy. Several local gun shops, not to much precision going on that I have seen. Reloading components available. Several indoor/outdoor ranges. Employment is good, depends on what you do, drop me a PM and I can let you know what I know, but we have Siemens, Shaw Energy, we actually make body armor and vehicle armor for the military, all kinds of stuff in the QC (Queen City). Good luck!

I am in Columbia SC and in development and property management. Construction is on the rise around here. We are in the process of building our second apartment community in 2 years. Carry laws here are pretty friendly as well.

Ryan

Looking to make that move myself and I believe NC has some good tax laws for retiring folk. Either way anything is better than CT in both taxes and gun laws. I will be moving to NC in the Fuquay Varina area as my brother lives down there now.

Just dont turn NC and SC into the Northeast like the Cali refugees did with Colorado and are trying to do here in Fla. If you ride a motorcycle there are few better states to live than the west Carolinas (Tenn is better for retirement, riding and as good for shooting though). I will have a retirement home in east Tenn and Fla, when I retire in 5 years.

Good move Rob. I moved to NC from NJ in 1982, and never looked back. I'm retired now, and would not live anywhere else. Please post when you get down here, so we can all go to the range and finger your S&B scope collection.

Really? You think I am leaving the state where I was born and raised almost 47 years ago and my family and my wife's family lives because I want to come down there and make it the same hell hole that this state is? Really?!?

Will do Bob. Should be in about 2 years when I can retire.

Yeah really, I am from NJ, I see it all the time. Sad as hell you have to leave but you will be better off for it in the long run, you will always miss the good things up there but its better down here by far. I strongly encourage you two to look at the tax rules for the Carolin's and Tenn before you make the move if you are retiring with any type of pension.

Then you obviously haven't seen people moving for the reasons I am. I am not moving to spread the cancer growing up here but because I won't live anywhere and give my tax dollars to anyone who thinks I am a criminal for following the Constitution of the United States. Pretty sure no one on this site would be moving to another state and doing what you think.

Taxes are taxes and every state will get you. I am not worried about them. CT is about there worst there is. Anything else is a step up. I am moving to NC to be near my brother so it doesn't matter to me if Tenn or SC has better tax rates.

I can't speak for SC, but the Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) has a robust and thriving shooting community in multiple disciplines. Nearly everything is within a 1-1.5 hour drive of Raleigh. If you dabble in pistol we have two monthly USPSA matches, four or five IDPA matches including the annual Carolina Cup, along with a hybrid "fun" match. We have the monthly Tarheel 3 gun matches along with the quarterly matches and the annual Tarheel challenge. On the precision and LR side we have four matches annually at Woody's: two DMM (team) and two precision (individual). The North State shooting club host a multitude of matches at Camp Butner including the Eastern CMP games. I know that there are a bunch of other stuff as well (bullseye, benchrest, trap, skeetsp, sporting clays, ect.). Wake County also has one of the nicest indoor shooting facilities on the East Coast open to the public. We are suppressor friendly to own and use in hunting with the slight caveat if you live in a big metropolitan county (Wake, Durham, Mecklenburg) or one with a resistive sheriff (they are political animals), you will have to go the NFA trust route.

Lots of different industries in the region, most paying good wages and growing. Taxes are a bit high for my liking, but nowhere near as bad as some other places. Weather is pretty good except for the hot and sticky days of late Jun, July, and Aug. Fall and Spring are typically very nice and Winter really doesn't start until mid to late Dec and is wrapping up by mid to late Feb. Lot's of activities outside of shooting including some world class golf courses, a rabid collegiate sports following (NC State, Duke, UNC), and of course NASCAR. :)

I'm originally from Western Pennsyltucky and when I retire I'm looking towards Western Carolina or Eastern Tennessee at least for the hot part of the year.

Here is a list of Google search terms for you:

Sir Walter Gun Club
Durham Rifle and Pistol Club
Durham Wildlife Club
Pitt County Wildlife Club
NC Section
The Range in Oxford
Tarheel 3gun
Woody's DMM match
Wake County Firearms Training Center
North State Shooting Club
Camp Butner
Tobacco Road Golf (Mike Stranz)
UNC Finley (Tom Fazzio)
Lonnie Poole Golf Course (Arnold Palmer)
Duke Golf Club (Robert Trent Jones Sr)

wife and I are looking at real estate in the RTP area now and are visiting over the July 4th holiday to see how I handle humidity. If I handle it OK I'll be trying to transfer out there ASAP.

I promise not to bring any CA bullshit with me, except my collection of 10 round mags that will have to be replaced with the real versions.

SC gun laws are pretty lax, very, very pro 2nd amendment state. If you have a carry permit in SC it is reciprocal with NC (not sure if it works visa versa, but probably). Also, it is legal to own and hunt with suppressors. They also just opened a night hunting season for Pigs and coyote (runs from Feb. 1 thru July I believe.) SC has a fair number of long range shooting facilities, but I would probably give the edge to NC in that category.

Good article detailing the latest SC guns laws is here: S.C. gun bills defy trends – The Post and Courier

We were the first to tell King George to kiss it, by protesting the Stamp Act in 1765 and confiscating all the tea. Of course, we were the first to tell "Fedzilla" to suck it, by firing on Fort Sumter. So, SC has a history of standing up to tyrannical governments.

But really, it all boils down to one question. Do you prefer college basketball or college football. If you prefer Bball, then NC is the obvious choice with UNC, Duke, Wake, and NCSt. Bball and BBQ is pretty much all they talk about there.

If you prefer college football, then SC is the obvious choice with Clemson and usc. Football and BBQ is pretty much all we talk about here.

Of course the BBQ in SC far exceeds the BBQ in NC. We use vinegar based around here and they like mustard and ketchup and crap. I've even heard they put cole slaw on their BBQ, which I'm pretty sure breaks the 11th commandment handed down by Moses.

In all seriousness, neither state is immune from their share of progressive liberal dumb-asses. Luckily, we still outnumber them, for now!

Jayne you don't handle the humidty in the coastal plains of NC, you simply learn to live with it. I moved to the mountains, all my kin thought I was crazy.

We have a two gun match on the 6th. If you ride over to Conover I will loan you any guns I own. Good luck with your search.

Thanks guys my time will be up and want to get out of here if I see another young gril on a cell phone up here and the taxes are high here to can I get lost in the mountains lol.

C'mon down! I've lived in Fuquay for 12 years and I love it.

Thanks. Was just down there a few weeks back for the Bushmaster Tarheel 3 Gun match and my brother is as excited as I am about me getting down there. Keep trying to win powerball so I can come down sooner but just doesn't seem to be working LOL

I will concede ya'll have the better football, but let us agree to disagree on the BBQ. :)

If you enjoyed the Bushmaster match, that is the same piece of property we utilize for the DMM match. I hope you are able to relocate sooner rather than later.

Yeah I was talking to a guy on my squad who was telling me about the matches that are held there. Look forward to being part of them. My brother's place was only about 25 min from that range.

In either case, I've never heard Anyone say, "When I retire, I think I'm going to move "Up North", just saying.....

Nope, both NC and SC suck. No good hunting, no fishing, basketball sucks, college football sucks, BBQ is terrible. Move along nothing to see here.

I usually live with it OK when we're on some tropical island, but do worry about having to work in it and dress inappropriately for the weather (work dress code is not exactly "light and breezy").

That would be awesome, but we're flying out on the 6th.

You people sure are friendly down that way.

We've seen that area on the map, and lacking anyone to tell us how to pronounce it we've taken to calling it "funky vagina". Yea, apparently we're 12 year olds. :)

Vagina is what the auto correct on my iPhone suggest for "varina". It makes for some interesting text messages sometimes. ;) Phonetically it is pronounced: Fu-kway Va-ri-na.

I should be in town the 5th, if you have any questions about the area feel free to PM me.

We call it Fuckaway Vagina so we are 12 too LOL

Hey Rob,

Just make sure you stop off at VA Beach on the last run down for some seafood before you head off with all them hillbillys. Oh and then there is a mile range at my finger tips too ;)

Cheers,

Doc

Hey don't talk about my future people like that! LOL Will do on the last trip but maybe before then. Haven't been down there in a long time. I think 1978 was the last trip i took to VA Beach. LOL

If you want to retire, look western or eastern... skip ANYTHING in Wake, Mecklenburg, and Orange Counties....namely Cary, Chapel Hill (Little Jersey), and Charlotte. They're great if you're working...but not for relaxing.

Avoid Ashville...it's the armpit of NC...liberals and hippies are all you see.

If you want a good median.....Catawaba, Wilkes, Caldwell, and surrounding counties are fantastic. I've been born and raised in Alexander and love it.....but regretfully have to move to RDU for work in the next few years.

NC and SC suck. Stay up north where the yanks all are happy and everything is perfect up there. So sick of the yanks moving down and bitching and crying about how slow life is and how stupid southerners are.......... So if you move down here SLOW the hell down and get used to things moving slower. Us natives like the slower pace of life and our southern accents.

I feel you for regular damn yankee's but Rob is a welcome addition to the southern way of life.

Cheers,

Doc

I don't know where you've been eating BBQ in NC but where I live its vinegar based too. As far as the cole slaw is concerned it is great on a BBQ sammich.

Thanks for showing that famous southern hospitality yawl are famous for LOL

Just remember as you get older you need to move closer to the hospitals. Raleigh area is replete with great facilities. Columbus, SC is good too.

Triad area is nice, been here for 58 years. 4 hours from salt water and 2 hours from clean mountain air. Many damn good hospitals.

Butner is 2 hours west and there are several outdoor and indoor ranges around. PHA range in Davidson county runs shotgun, 3 gun, and cowboy matches and has a 100 yard and a 200 yard range with 6 pistol pits/steel.

Ben Dover I did my boot down there I love the pace of life there manners and all there history I have to be here awhile longer then good by for good rob01 meet you there.

you'll love NC...seriously. I'm 45 minutes from the mountains and GREAT driving roads....5 hours from the beach and all the fresh flounder and shrimp I can catch....and have more local gun shops than I know what to do with!

Oh, and if you live in Alexander County....you have no wait on PPP's, we're fast on CCP's, NFA friendly, and we have several ranges around including Hawk's Ridge and the infamous Hickory Egg Shoot in Vale.

SC has better gun laws than NC, but NC has more and better competitions. NC has more scenic areas, I've been told taxes are better in SC. Either one is a win.

!

BLASPHEMY!!! Everyone knows that Eastern NC (Vinegar based) is the original and still best...I am on a National Competition BBQ Team and its all we use!

See, I told we all we talk about is BBQ!!

Glad to hear some of you North Carolinian's have some sense, lol!

Hey jack! There ain't but one true BBQ left in the world, it is centered in EASTERN NC! Don't even be talking smack bout it neether. Fights are started here over BBQ, so be careful.

Nah you aren't being a 12yr old, I have called Chocowinity, "Chocolate Weenie" all my life and I am 44.

Yes Asheville is pretty much the armpit of NC, Greensboro ain't great neither, matter of fact I won't live in town no matter where I go. I live about 13 miles from Asheville city limits. There are some really good folks in Buncombe. The aren't all Subaru drivin, sandal wearin, crystal worshippin, dreadlock sportin, tofu eatin, granola crunchin,.....
