Well guys after months of research I've decided to build a custom 6.5 creedmoor. I ordered the action, stock, and barrel yesterday. ETA is 4-6 months.

Here's my build...I just have a few loose ends to tie up:

ACTION: Defiance Deviant Medium extra length target port with heavy tang, shallow fluting, standard bolt knob
BARREL: Bart Standard Target #5 contour 1.2-.80 6.0lb
STOCK: Manners T5A with mini-chassis inletted for deviant action, 10 round mag, atlas rail & adjustable butt spacer painted in solid desert earth
TRIGGER: Jewell trigger
BIPOD: Atlas
BRAKE: ??? Can anyone recommend one? Looking for something to prevent dust/sand from being kicked up when shooting in the desert.

All I need to find now is a time machine and a good smith to barrel the action, chop the barrel to 24", thread and time a brake, and Cerakote it.

As far as assembly goes I was told by Manners that I should be able to drop the barreled action in the stock and be GTG without any bedding....just torque a couple of bolts. My only concern with the build is if the trigger is a DIY install?

Yes, the mini chassis stock is a drop in stock. Good choice!
Trigger is fairly diy, but if you're having a Smith do the chambering might as well have him install the trigger.
For the 6.5 creed, take a look at the apa little Jimmy or little bastard brake.

Oh, also, look up Phoenix custom rifles. Excellent quality and i believe they are getting caught up on builds and are only a few months out on their complete builds. They just did a rebarrel/brake install/misc machine work and cerakote for me and I'm am very pleased with the quality

Your shooting buddies will thank you for NOT getting one. Id even thank you if you didnt get one. They're obnoxious to be blunt.
If you're shooting by yourself all the time then go for it.

Otherwise, sounds like a very nice build, best of luck and let us know how it shoots.

Haha. I will be shooting most of the time by myself. However, I'm not looking so much for a brake as a flash kill. Where I shoot (out here in the socal desert) dirt and sand gets blown up easily when shooting prone.

Here's what the desert floor looks like from a dogs point of view...lots of granite sand and volcanic pumice:

So now that I'm looking at all these muzzle brakes I'm re-thinking my barrel contour. I like the flush-look of the M24/40 .900" contour with the badger thruster brake as shown here:

Then again that adds a bit of weight, 0.2lb to the barrel..

I just got done shooting in a class with 4 of us in pretty close proximity all with Holldand's radial brake installed. No real issues with the dust getting kicked up around us with a lot of dry loose dirt around. There is a little extra wind coming out the side but thats about the most of it. Not as much of a shock wave as I've felt off others. I'm sold on them as it makes spotting your own shots a LOT easier!

Here are a few pics:

I've shot this brake on a 308 and a 300WM and both have been just awesome for spotting your own impact and there are no real dust issues at all. Even as a spotter when you're behind the shooter its not bad at all. No really all that noticeable in my opinion.

bh,

What ranges were you shooting at with the 308 and 300WM?

Also out of curiosity what class were you taking in OR? I was just up in 3 sisters/oakridge/ashford last summer!

as far as brakes go, I am having a little Jimmy installed on my new build, but right now, I have a Big Chubby. It is amazing. A bit on the large side, but the ports are vented up, so you don't suffer the crap that JGorski was speaking of. If not, just give yourself a bit of room between you and your buds. You can also be really nice and bring a tarp and lay it under the brake and extend it out several feet...that solves the dirt/rock issue as well.

Here is a link for a brake

ROSS SCHULERS PAGE

I have used several of Ross Schulers brakes and they are wonderful. A very close design to a Holland brake, but its a 3rd of the cost.
You will be hard pressed to find another brake for this price, let alone a better brake period.

I would recommend a Timney trigger in lieu of a Jewel based on your being in a dusty and dirty environment.

For a brake I would recommend a APA "little bastard"

For a smith I would highly recommend Phoenix Custom Rifles, they can do all of the work and provide some of the materials you mentioned in your build list as well.

I had Krieger put this APA "Little Bastard" brake on this new 300WM build. The barrel is .96" at the muzzle (24"). They turned the brake down about .25" to be flush. it is yet unfired so I can't report on the performance yet.
