I looked all over the internet for actual user reviews for the Spark and only found questions. I wasn't sure if it was worth the $499 since there were not end user reviews that sounded like they came from someone with nightvision experience. I had been saving for a TNVC/PVS-14 for a while, but that is not a short process when your'e sole source of income is the mighty VA. Anyway, I was still researching, when my wife sold here Cannon 7D and bought it for me, since it was in our cart at Amazon.

My reasons for looking towards the Spark were this: I am spoiled when it comes to night vision after being a Squad Designated Marksman and infantry team leader in the 82nd Airborne, with 15 months in Sadr City and a little short tour in Afgan with 2nd Ranger bat. I tried a multitude of Gen 1 devices and they are the only thing more frustrating than suran wrap or Great Value toilet paper. They are pretty much garbage as far as I'm concearned. The Spark got my attention because it had the same resolution as Gen2 night vision and the same recoil rating seing as how it has a ceramic based tube, but at 1/3 the price. On to the actual review...

The first thing I noticed was that it didnt look like a toy, as do most Gen 1 units.

She bought me a skull crusher too, and it is 10x as comfy as the military skull crushers, which I am fully aware, is not saying much.

Another huge bonus to me, being budget minded, is the versatilty. It can be weapons mounted, camera mounted, head mounted, used as a 1x device for navigation, or can have 3x or 5x adaptors added to it for a reasonable price.

I have spent a couple weeks with it now and feel that it has just as good of a picture as any of the several Gen2 units I have played with. Is it a set of PVS-15's? No, but its as good as a Gen2 PVS-14, picture wise. I havent jumped out of a C-130 with the spark, or ran over it, so I can't really attest to its durability, but it looks well made, and has handled the recoil of several hundred 5.56, .300 BLK and 6.8SPC rounds without a hitch.

There are NO artifacts or blems in the picture of any kind. I don't know if that is a result of the manufacturing process, or if it is just a good tube. But I do know that the 14's, 15's, Anvis', and even the Raptor's that I used in service had artifacts of some sort, albiet most were tiny and at the peripheree.

It does have to be focused a little more precisely than some of the Gen2 14's I have used, but this is only when trying to see fine detail, it doesnt seem to make a difference when ID'ing yotes or pigs at killing distances.

I tried to take pics through the unit, but without a camera adapter, it was tricky, so I ordered a camera adapter that should be in this week. When it gets here, I will post some pics of the same objects at the same distance through it, a Gen 1 ATN device, and will try to borrow Gen 2 and 3 devices to compare as well.

I use it with a UNIMAX IR laser, which I am not happy with. Its the first class1 IR laser I have used, and as to be expected, it's not a PEQ-15. But, what was not expected is that the dot (no its not blooming, we are talking even at distance) looks like an uber hairy 8" star fish covered in shag carpet. Not cool. Is that how they all look or do I have a bad unit? I would love some feedback on that if any of you own one.

I also have the Armasight IR810W illuminator, as well as a Streamlight illuminator and an IR Surefire head for a 6xp. The surefire head failed the first time I used it weapons mounted. The streamlight is ok, but it is HUGE. What I like about the IR810W is that it is focusable down to a very tight beam, on out to a wide flood. It is also adjustable for intensity so that it can be used for a few hundred yard shot, or turned down and focused out for use in an SSE scenario, or some other similar indoor fiasco where the streamlight would wash out the picture.

Here are a few pics of the rifle I use with it, and the monocular itself. Also, ignore my Tactical english setter, he was just preforming my pre mission PMCS on my kit for me while I watched the bachelor. I will get some thru-the-tube comparison pics as soon as I get my adaptor.

Looking forward to the through-the-tube pics. Thanks for the write up, and thank you for your service.

Does anyone have advice on how to get good pics through the tube? I've got a cannon 7d and a nikon coolpix. I took some pics last night and the gen1 pics show nothing; the CORE pics look like gen 1. Which still shows the difference between the two, I would just like to get some pics a little closer to 1st person.
Thanks in advance.

120 lumen white light, 87m.jpgATN 360 with spot Illum. 87m.jpgSpark 3x IR810W.jpgHere are a few pics i took before I got my adapter. They are not even a close representation of looking through the tube with the naked eye, but you can still see a difference I guess. I will get some better ones now that I have the adapter, when I get time. Ill do it with people subjects as well.
These are from my front pourch to my mail box. The first one is with a 120lumen streamlight (white), second is an ATN NV360 (gen1), and the third is through the Spark. Still looking for tips on how to get more realistic pics through the tube...
used an iPhone 4 for these pics.

Looks like you are using some IR supplement with the Sparks . What are you using to enhance the mailbox on the 3rd pic. ?

With the Spark I was using the IR810W focusable illuminator I got with the unit. I used an ATN spot illuminator with my nv360 (second pic).

I'll do one with the gen 1, but using the ir810 for ileum.

How well does the unit work without an IR illuminator?

Pretty well, I am going on a hunt tonight, if you like I can post some pics up in the morning when I get back. I will do some side by sides through that and the gen1, with no illumination.

Delta4-3,
I would love to see some of the pics. Thanks so much!
Also, you mentioned in a previous post that you bought the camera adapter. Can I ask what kind of camera you can connect to it? I have a DSLR but it looks like only a point and shoot can connect.
Thanks!

Ive, got a DSLR as well, so I had to get the mount that ataches to the dovetail and a cameras tripod threads. I got rained out last night so I didnt get to go, but I will get all the pics requested over the weekend, and hopefully kill some stuff in the process.

Well, I got rained out the last two nights, so hopefully tonight will be a little better for playing in the dark. Anybody have any experience with the pro-tec helmet from TNVC? Is it comfy?

The protec is a budget helmet IMO, there are way better helmets out there but they cost more. I sold my pro tec when the ops core came out, much more comfortable.

Thanks for the reply. Do you think it would be hands down more comfortable than a skull crusher? I'm still in the process of saving for 14's and a better helmet, so this setup is kind of a holdover till then.

Yes, the protec is an improvement over the skull crusher for sure. One other thing to think about is that the protec does not include a shroud.

Delta4-3,
Sorry to bother, but I was just checking to see if you've been able to get any shots through the NV without the IR illuminator yet.
Didn't you say it was comparable to the pvs-14? I've used a pvs-14 and I'm afraid it may have spoiled me. It was fantastic.
I guess I'm just hesitant to buy anything other than the pvs...
Thanks!

I think I said comparable to a Gen2 pvs-14, I hope I did anyway, otherwise it would be misleading! It has rained several nights and I was being a bum on the two nights it didn't. I'll see if I can get out there tonight and get some posted up. I'll see if I can do some indoors too. Sorry for the delay, and thanks for the reminder. If you end up having any questions about it, feel free to hit me up.

The hunt ended up being a bust due to the rain, unfortunately, but I did manage to endure it for maybe 5 minutes.

It's not letting me upload any more pics because I have met my quota. How do I delete old pics? Also, how do you post them as regular pictures instead of thumbnails?
Thanks

I wish I knew. I'm new to the forum and completely clueless as to how that would be done. Would you care to email the the pics???
Sorry to be a bother! Thanks!

Hey Delta can you please send me some of the pictures. The spark may be the answer for me, allowing me to get something I want versus what I need at a reasonable price.

Maccabee, my bad, I got sidetracked, they will be headed to you in the next 10 mikes. Ajax, shoot me your email in a pm and I'll send some to you as well.

Hey can you upload these pictures to Imgur.com ? Its free and allows hot linking . very interested to see photos

Haha delta I enjoyed the pet name ;-)
And have you got those other pics going? the ones with the "real camera". Cheers bro.
Regards, Macca.

I have, I just haven't gotten to my PC to upload them yet. Im setting up with imgur to upload them here. I'm hping to get the deed done when I get home tonight.

I get home from surgery today, so I'll get some pics up if I stay concious.

I spoke with Gary from armasight last week as I was interested in getting a gen3 setup. An interesting tidbit: they managed to increase the Spark's resolution even more to where it will manage 60-70 LP! Im not sure when they will be hitting the market with the higher res, but it will be interesting to see for sure.

60-70? Wow! I wonder if it will be the same price. I have a Spark on layaway and its just about paid off and that would be a very pleasant suprise if I got the 60-70 unit. Right now its what? 45-55? Are you still happy with the spark after having it a few months?

Yeah, I'm guessing most will be closer to 60 than 70, but that's still pretty good for the price. Not to dash your hopes, but I don't think they have shipped any new ones out yet. I still really like it. The best thing i did was to get a helmet for it. I would highly recommend getting a pro-tec from TNVC. A well spent $80 if you ask me.
I still really like mine. I didn't use it a lot in from mid June until last week due to a botched surgery, but have got out and played with it a lot in the past week. The furthest I've been able to consistently engage targets with it head mounted, rocking the laser was at 315 yards for E-type shillouets. I'll get some picture of my range through the unit up this week.

It's come in really handy for wiping out coons at the deer feeders. This time of year, all our feeders across the farm have up to ten coons at them at any given time during the night. With a suppressed .22 the scatter but come back within 5 minutes. You can get 3-4 before they know what's going on, then move to another feeder. I think it may be a little funner than deer hunting! My buddy uses a pvs14 with a pinnical tube, and obviously it is noticeably better, but from a tree stand 20-30 yards away, he really doesn't have an advantage over me. If we were triple that distance from targets that small, he would probably have a higher kill ratio than me.

I have since tried it mounted behind my ACOG and it made for a really clear picture, better than expected by far. However, I never use the rubber eyecups on any night vision, which I started doing in the military. This causes a little issue when you have zero eye releif on a suppressed 6x45 and are a wuss like me. You end up having a tingly eyebrow. Laser is tops.

Sorry to come in late, and if it is a dumb question, but how did you mount this to your PT helmet? And just to clarify, on pic no 1, is that with an IR filter on the light, or just a literal white light on the mailbox? Thanks for your help.

Whatever happened to those 70lpm pics? Does anyone here work for Armasight?

I don't work for them, but I just got the new spark to play with for a few days. I'll get some pics through it and post them here. I think what I like best about the new one is that it isn't as focus sensitive.

I took a few more pics, Ill get them posted up. They are through the old model.

Ok so I got mine tonight and wow! It is way nicer than I expected. Image clarity is really good. Only draw back for me is the fish eye. Its quite noticeable but can be worked around. Will get some pics done soon as in hopefully this weekend. Conditions tonight were rainy. Will get an additional ir light as well. Overall very happy! I paid for this with my own money. this thing has lots of potential and is a keeper. Definitely not the Gen 1 of yester year.

Here are some pics in the house with the cover on. Will get some outdoors tonight. Hoping they show. Havent used the new style uploader before. Ok I give up. They are hosted on photobucket. If someone would be kind enough to explain how this new set up works, I'd appreciate it.

Overall does anyone running one of these units believe it is money well spent or to save up for a better one?
