Anyone know what the difference is with the Viper line?

I know the PST has illum, they all seem to be 30MM tubes.

I know the PST has good rep, what about the HS?

I was looking at the SWFA SS scopes, but the Vortex Viper seems like it might be a better deal.

I am about broke from buying 1K-2K scopes and looking at quality scopes that dont cost more than the rifle.

I know what you mean, I recently bought an ATACR, a couple of Zeiss HD5s, a Swaro Z5, and a high end Leupold. Then I realized I was tapped out in glass money for now, but still needed a scope on a .223.

So I picked up a "straight" Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 mil-dot w/30mm tube for $429 and it is a surprisingly nice scope. The mil-dots are not too big and are ample (not just squeezed in to the center quarter-inch) and glass is very sharp in bright daylight. I am sure it will have some drawbacks, but for the price it seems like it will easily fill the bill.

You know, for some hunters $429 is exorbitant and considered high end. For us target, varmint and tactical shooters, $429 is often beneath our consideration. Sometimes we need to step back and take a close look at what's out there -- like someone posted here a while back, at some point you are paying for pride more than precision.

The regular Vipers are only available in SFP and have capped turrets. The HS models can be had in both FFP and SFP. However, the HS front focal plane models are only available with the MOA based XLR reticle. The PST models all have the pseudo-stop and illumination. Additionally, they can be had in FFP with a MIL or MOA reticle.

All of the Viper lines are assembled in the Philippines. I own multiple scopes in all three lines and feel that the HS FFP and FFP PST glass is equivalent and the top of the line. Nothing wrong with the basic Viper glass or non-FFP glass, but it's not quite on par with the FFP models glass. The only Mil/Mil models are within the PST line. Any of the HS line that have an exposed elevation turret come with the zero stop shims as the PST line. Buy any Vortex product with confidence as they have a 100% no BS lifetime warranty on all their products. If you do have some defect, they will typically cover return shipping and turnaround time is 7-10 business days.
