Got two Savages that don't eject well.

If I ease the bolt handle back to eject, often it will pull the spent case out of the chamber and let go of it on top of the next case. If I pull the handle back with authority it does a better job, but is still not 100% reliable.

One action has 1500+ rounds on it as a 22-250, the other had 2500+ rounds on it as a 260. Me thinks new ejector springs are in order for both of them. Will that do it?

Hard to say for sure. I had the same issue, even when running the bolt hard. I replaced the extractor, ejector and spring all at the same time since the parts are cheap and it fixed the issue. I'd start with the spring and ejector and go from there. Worst case, you order a new bolt but it shouldn't come to that.

New parts help sometimes, but the best fix is a .140" ball bearing to replace the extractor bearing. The factory bearing is too small (~.120"), which allows the extractor to move without spring tension.

Thanks fellers! Seems as though I'm on the right track.

Today, I ordered extractor spring and ball bearing (for emergency spare) ejector and ejector spring and pin. I will talk to Lisa at Savage Shooters tomorrow and get the larger ball bearing. I have read that the larger bearing helps quite a bit.

The ejector spring on the Savages are a weak link. A hot load will get one every time. Not saying that you shot it hot, but with that many rounds, I'm 99% sure the ejector spring is the culprit.

Oh, both actions have had hot loads run through them. I'll leave it at that. But i figured that many rounds just wore them out. I've about got the Accutrigger worn out on the 260 also.

Garvey,

I may have a few .140" ball bearings spares I can send your. Let my corroborate that I do and will send you a pm. It helps, also modifying the ejector helps too.

Trailrider121, you are awesome! I've certainly got the means to remove some stock from the ejector. The drawings are great!

I had a Model 10 .308 that needed the extractor/spring replaced after 15 rounds. It was doing the exact same thing. Very simple and cheap fix.

I did this to my 7 saum cause it was not ejecting the shells 75% of the time. Very weak with new spring and ejector, and extractor and .140" ball. So a few guys helped me out and said to mod the ejector. Hell it throws them now.

I was told from .010" to .020" should be good, but remove no more than .020". I use a small file and made sure it was square and deburred along with deburring the ejector hole. Solved my problems... Good luck!

I have a .223 (unfired) stainless fluted dbm in laminate model 12. It does all this. I'm surprised if a shell actually leaves the ejection port. The extractor bearing is considerably undersized and seems to only grasp the very edge of the rim. So, I know I need a larger bearing. I removed my ejector and the only thing that matches your given measurements is the overall diameter. I'm wondering when they changed styles or if its an old design. I read somewhere that the .223 has old design components.

The ejector has a stem that fits into the spring as a guide. I took off 15 thousandths where your drawing indicated. In my rifles situation you can see a small gap (the area opposite to where material was removed) under the ejector when installed in the bolt head. I'm not sure if there should be any at all. The gap seen is larger than the material that I removed, so I think it was slightly there to begin with. This is my first Savage and my first post here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sorry, no pics at this time, but can get some this evening perhaps.
