I Read a-lot about people having luck with Varget for .308 loads. I came across both Varget and H414 today and picked up 1 Lb of H414 to try it out. My Lyman book says it works well with heavier bullets. I am looking to use 178 gr Hornady hpbt. Can anyone vouch for H414, as the stores salesman swore by it using 150 gr soft point.

Thanks!

H-414/ W-760 powder is not the most efficient for the .308 Winchester. H-414 is a ball powder with the burning speed of about IMR 4350. Just a little too slow for the 308 Win. I have used it with 175 gr. bullets with fair success, but Varget is a much better powder overall.

H414 is a ball powder (spherical), it pours much easier than Varget, but V is less sensitive to temp changes. H414, W760 and H380 are some old school powders, folks swear by them because they have been been successful for so many years (before the extreme powers became popular). H414 really shine in cartridges like 7x57, but in 308 you are running higher pressures to achieve the same velocity as varget.

What?! More powder to get same velocity but not more pressure.

I've had really good result with h414 and 155 smk. Sub moa at 550y.

155 smk
Hornady 1x
49.0-49.5
2.835

a 155 palma 51gn of H414 2793 fps = 50.2k cup varget 47.0c 2909 fps = 49.4k cup the difference can also be felt in recoil.

In the 7x57 140 grainers over H414 will clock 200 fps faster at the same 46k cup pressure

In the 30-06 shooting 150's H414 and Varget are about the same. Velocity vs pressure

This info is right out of Hodgdons manual, but anyone who shoots both powders will feel the difference. I picked up on it when loading for the 7x57 and just scrapped both and went with H4350.

I wouldnt have a prob loading that powder for hunting rounds, but I feel any of the extreme powders are more efficient.
