My daughter Cait just shot her first 600 yrd FTR competition and she did great. She went home and I helped her order a Savage 12 FTR as this is a great starter rifle as she learns long distance shooting skills. her, and my question is this. She has identified the Sightron SIIISS10-50X60LRTD "cross hairs with a dot in middle", as what she thinks she would like ( $ 1039 ). Her reasoning is price starting in and it's great reviews. I think she is right. But here is the thing. There are so many variations of this scope with respect to Reticle type. I don't think she needs the mil dot style as she already knows the distance. With the fore mentioned reticle type being one dot .125 in the middle of the cross hairs I think that is all she needs for F class shooting. I would appreciate any thoughts on this as we really are not sure yet and haven't gone to many matches yet. But she wants to get something asap that she wont out grow and that will get her off on the right track. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Jimmy:D

In fclass, you know the distance, you know the target size and you should know the size of markings on the target. I think that eliminates the benefits of nearly any kind of graduation on the reticle. Youll have time to dial wind, you'll have spotters and previous shots to help you gauge that wind and I've even seen guys plot their scope adjustments over top of an image of the target, making corrections simple to gauge.

With options like that and a rifle dedicated to fclass, I think you'd be fine with a plain/straight lined reticle and less clutter is a good thing at 50x.

Just my opinion though and I'm no professional f-classer! Good luck to you and your daughter!

My wife has that very scope on her F-TR rifle. The cross hairs are very thin and the small dot will nearly cover the x in the x ring. The reticle can be lost in the black under certain lighting conditions. You have to pay very close attention which is what you should do anyway.

Good advice - +1

I have the same scope with the lrmoa reticle. The only real benefit I've seen so far is that the hashes are useful for sighting corrections during load development (I usually just use a plain 1 inch dot for testing groups). If I had the dot or the fine crosshair I don't think it would hurt me at all in fclass.

I've never had a Sightron but they certainly get great reviews. The limiting factor of the 10-50 is only 50" of elevation. With a O base your daughter can get to 600yds. but not a 1000yds. A 20deg. base would put her almost in the center at 600 and still have enough elevation to take her to 1000yds.
