just cannot get the darn things to shoot? I worked up a load at 100 yards got the grouping down past 1/2 MOA, took them out to 300 yards and the darn things are all over the place! Done this with two diffrent powders? I was hopeing to use this bullet for 600 yards and less but it does not seem like they are going to work out.

308 Savage F/TR 30" factory tube. Tried both with Varget and MR 2000!

I shot some this weekend at 600 with pretty good results. Shooting out of a GAP Crusader, Lapua Brass, 43gr Varget, Fed 210M Primers at 2.80 OAL. I prefer the 175SMK's but right now those are about impossible to find around here, came across the 178gr in both AMAX and BTHP. I will say I think the AMAX's shot better though.

They shot awesome in my Surgeon 308. Winchester Brass filled with 43.8 Varget at 2.80 oal.
Hope you can get them to work, they definitely had a less drift then the 175 SMK's.

What's the twist on the Savage barrel? My 1/10 Krieger loves the 178s both the AMAX and HPBT. 44.0gr of Varget in Lapua brass, .010 off the lands puts the velocity right at 2700fps. To be honest though, my 308 hasn't been picky with any match bullet from Sierra or Hornady.

They have shot great for me out to 750 yards. DTA SRS using lapua brass 44gr Viht n550 CCI br2 primer seated to .020 off lands. 22 inch barrel. 100 yard 5 shot groups .5" or better. Shoot 12x12 steel out to 750 and can normally keep 6 inch group or slightly better

I just tried, on a whim, a box of Hornady Superperformance Match with 178gr BTHPs from my Rem 5R. This is a 5-shot group at 100 yards.

I'll be working up loads with 178gr A-MAXs...my best .308 loads with A-MAX 168s use 44.0gr of RL15 so I'll be starting at 42.0gr of RL15 and working up. I'm betting between 43.0 and 43.5gr of RL15 will do it. I suspect Varget will be a good alternative choice.

Good luck,

FH

PS-The Rem 5R has an 11.25" twist. I expect it should stabilize 175s and 178s. What is the twist on the Savage?

In my FN SPR 24" 1:12" I kinda have the opposite thing going on. I was getting very frustrated doing load work ups at 100y and no matter what charge of varget or 2000mr they were 1+moa groups and I was about to give up on them. Then I extended the range and ill be damned they shoot .5 MOA form 300-700y and I get consistent hit's on 12" steel at 1K

44.4g varget, FC brass, F210m = 2720fps

I shot this yesterday. Five shots at 100yards. 44gr Varget, Lapua brass, 210m primers. I have not tried them out further. I'm hoping they shoot as well as the amax.

In my SPR the Amax shoots more accurate but the hpbt's shoot better at 800+ and I am addicted to shooting out that far so I stay with them... Not to mention I can't find the Amax's anywhere
