Savage Model 110 Detachable Box Magazine Woes

I bought Savage Model 110 , it is chambered in 7mm rem mag. I like the Basix trigger design. I like the floating bolt head design. I like the barrel nut to set headspace. I like the BT bolt handle that can be installed in seconds. I don't like the tupperware stock. I don't like the stagger feed design in the rear action screw area and I don't like the fact that this rifle has no detachable magazine. This is no good when you have a one piece scope mount. I ordered a new stock from a reputable gunstock manufacturer for sixty dollars. And after reading on Savageshooters.com they said I can get a Detachable Box Magazine Kit, from Sharpshooters Supply. So I ordered it. It was eighty-five dollars. So I got the parts, it had no instructions. There is not one good blog or sticky over at Savageshooters.com on how to do this. The first thing was, I didn't like was that the magazine box and magazine floorplate fit was poor and it had to be modified. Then. I also noticed that the magazine box didn't positively lock into the frame. It can be easily pushed out. They provide no action screws for this product and the front screw they gave me was the wrong size. Also, they provide no template or dimensions for inletting the stock , that is inexcuseable in the days of autocad. Not to have directions is bad to. No you tube video on this. Ok so I went about inletted my very nice walnut stock. I had to take out about 1/2" in front action screw area along with a notch right next to the screw this weakened this area about 50 percent. The rear action was area was inletted about 3/8" of an inch this gave me about 1/4" of wood at the rear action screw area. With the help of Savage Arms, Sharpshooters Supply and Savageshooters.com I managed to bubba my rifle up and flush 150 dollars down the toilet. Sharpshooters Supply claim these parts came from Savage, they came up with great stock design and provide great technical support for this project. Another thing I wonder why Sharpshooters Supply don't inlet Savage stocks with stagger feed magazines? I also like to thank Savageshooters.com for recommending to me how I can bubba up my rifle. In Japan , the stagger feed stock design in rear pillar area would be considered a defect. So would a a tupperware stock like mine. When I made a you tube video about this and posted it on Savageshooters.com they kicked my ass of it. No word from Sharpshootersupply on what they want to do about this. I have had contacted Savage to see what can be done.

Now I wished I bought on Old Remington. I could of just got with a wood stock and pillar bedded. And I could of bought a Kwik Klip system form Cabela's and been done with it.

Thanks for the information and photographs. From the look of the receiver, it is not the current feeding configuration. In that vintage , the magazine frame ears slid into slots in the front and back of the magazine opening (on the bottom of the receiver). Depending on the fit, some builders would swage the ears in place. The magazine that you purchased looks like the new configuration feeding system – which does not physically attach to the receiver (as the old configuration did). Savage does not sell or endorse any conversion kit for this vintage receiver. ( Direct from the horses mouth.)

It s not that big of a deal. I did talk a Director at Savage and sent him the pics and was in awe. He didn't see how the magazine would stay up there, their DBM's use a spring to lock them in place. He agreed with me that was not a very good solution. The parts were mailed back Sharpshooters Supply. Also he seen how my stock gut bubba'd up.

+1 for Jeff at CDI. His dbm is by far one of the best I've used. Forget the factory Savage setup. We have a model 116 in my shop as a rental that had the bag release latch break the first time out.

And this is why you don't work on rifles unless you know what you're doing, have clear instructions as well as the right tools. Chalk this up as a life lesson and send it to a smith.

I have a dbm on a Savage stagger feed that Jeff @ CDI did for me. It is flawless. Your best bet would be to give Jeff a call (941-961-3185) He or Pam will get you squared away immediately. And if you decide to ditch that stock, then order a nice Manners stock and send them Jeff's bottom metal and they'll send you your stock with it already installed.

I'm guessing here that that they probably used a centerfeed stock and had to modify it to fit the blind magazine conversion setup/ The stock was probably made inletted for a DBM frame. and has the release button. And the magazine was probably a Savage Drop Box Magazine. I'm sure that there may have been modifications to receiver and to the stock that well beyond the Home Gunsmith like myself. A Modification like this on $270.00 dollar rilfe in my case is not cost effective. I would like to know how much it cost you and please post some pics. I was sold a Model 10 frame and floorplate by.... it sure wasn't CDI It was market as a Conversion Kit.

For the blind, detachable and hinged floor plate magazine configurations, the same magazine box is utilized. The blind magazine consists of a box and follower. For the detachable box magazine, it uses the same components, plus a snap on bottom cap.

Now one may start with a blind magazine rifle and upgrade to DBM or HFP by adding the correct components.

You seen what I was sold. If you could Jeff's to comment this blog I would love to hear his input.

I am a longtime savage shooter, my recommendations are as follows so take them if ya want them!
1. Get a good stock, stagger feed LA are getting harder and harder to find. Bell & Carlson still have them. Choate still makes them as well. Just understand that on this site these are considered lower end stocks, though I have had good luck with both. The choate tactical is a HEAVY bugger. If you insist on wood, go with a Boyd's stock or Richard's Microfit.
2. Find this stock and as stated above, send it to Jeff and have a CDI installed WITH A MILL. He really is the only game in town with a decent DBM for a savage LA stagger feed. The guys at stockade stocks also make their own DMB that use AICS mags, I had one on a Savage 300 Win Mag and it worked very well, their turn around time is more than Jeff, and Jeff is a well respected commodity however.

Savage shooters has a very cozy relationship with SSS, so I can see getting dumped off of there, they don't want to lose revenue. SSS customer service SUCKS!!! but sometimes with savage items they are the only game in town.

If you wanted to start over, get a Remington and use the Rem/age barrel nut system, the best of both worlds.....

It is not the end of the world. I will get another beautiful Walnut stock from Numrich and mag box and it might cost sixty dollars no sweat from me. I do like this rifle. I like that it's calibered in 7mm Remington Magnum. The basix trigger design is great . The floating bolt head design is excellent. I already have a Bt bolt handle on the bolt. SSS parts have been sent back to them . And I expect a refund for at least that. I only paid 270 dollars for this rifle. And I can dump tuperware stock to a hunter. The Walnut stock I'm sure can be reinforced with steel pillars.

Ok I finally got to the bottom of a this. Now, SSS knew exactly what type of weapon I had. They knew it was stagger feed type and I asked them them in if this will work on my rifle in a an email , they remained silent. They were told when I ordered the part, what type of rifle I have. I was sold and marketed what they claimed to was DBM conversion kit. I was not told by SSS that if I wanted to do this I would need to but a new gunstock. Also they sold me a magazine floorplate that was not for my rifle. If this Con-version would even work I would need a new magazine and not a floorplate. Also since my rifle was a stagger feed, it would more than likely require some machining on the rifle, something that even Savage doesn't know about, condone or endorse. What I was really sold by the Savage Gurus was Accu Trigger Model Magazine Frame and a Magazine Floorplate. This destroyed my gunstock and my magzine box so SSS could sell me $78.20 of wrong parts for my rifle. When they were returned to SSS , you better read the fine print, because they will charge you a twenty-five percent restocking fee and dock twenty five dollars for not calling them on the phone. Well they certainly earned their F rating with the BBB. Now that would be like someone selling me parts for a Ford F150 when I have Ford Ranger. A Ford dealer.

Like said a bunch- research could have saved you. Hell you would have learned really quick to basically AVOID SSS.
YOU destroyed your stock by doing work and not research, just saying. You know their BBB rating, and yet are here ranting like it's something new.
Pick up a pawn shop accu-trigger 110 for ~$250, strip it down and use the parts already bought if want. Hunt down one of the HS take offs and use CDI or Accurate-Mag bottom metal and be done. A little research into this could have saved you a month of headaches.
