Awhile ago I decide I would purchase some mouth calls from Kerry Carver to start to do some coyote hunting. I got the calls and didn't really know what I was doing. So I would listen to electronic calls and just try to sound something like that. Well I had given calling a few tries with no success in different locations. Pretty much didn't know what the hell I was doing or the coyotes where I had been hunting have heard it all and just weren't going for what I was putting out there. So I have been practicing some and thought to myself I was getting better.

I got a call from my girlfriend that one of their calves on their ranch had gotten attacked by some coyotes and she had been seeing them a lot lately. I packed up my rifle one day and headed over their after work. As I pull in the driveway I see 3 coyotes running across the pasture. I started rushing to get my rifle out of the case, spin on the can, find a mag, and load it. I get all that done in a few minutes and walk through the gate and here comes another one. It sits down at about 300 yds from me. I set my rifle down on the water tank and hold 1 mil and rock a shot off. It flipped over and it was DOA. I was pretty pumped as this was my first sound dog I have ever killed.

After I shot this I decided to walk over to another pasture and take a look as they had come from that direction. As I get closer and look thru the tree line I can see one way out in the grass. I jump over the fence and find a place to get a shot. I didn't grab my range finder and estimated the distance at about 500. I took a shot and didn't see any splash. The coyote took off and then suddenly stopped. I took another shot and just sent it over its back. It was gone after that.

A few days later I decide to head back over to that spot and do some calling. I am calling for about 2 mins and shut it down for about 5 to 10 mins. I do this for about 30 mins and I hear a limb move on a tree. I am in a pretty thick tree line with a lot of fallen trees and brush. I look over to my left and there stands 4 coyotes staring at me about 20ft away. I stay perfectly still. I am trying to figure out what the hell I am going to do as I only have my 16lb comp rifle that is as long as I am tall. I am laying prone on a mat on a small pond damn. The coyotes turn away and I spin the rifle in their direction but couldn't crack a shot before they took off. They jump the fence and hop thru really tall grass, which was pretty funny to watch. I turned my rifle to where they were going to come out of the tall grass and head into the trees. I crack a shot off at the last one and missed it and wacked a tree. The shot I took measured at 385, which I measured it after they were long gone.

About a week later I decide to invite a good friend of mine out to help me out. He has been with me a few times when we couldn't get anything to come in. We walk over and setup about 40yds from the last spot. I am between 2 trees and he is just to the right of me. From this spot we had a way better viewing angle of the pasture.

Mike is on the AR and I have my Comp rifle again. I start calling with my closed reed call from Kerry. I call for about 2 mins and stop for 2 mins. About 10 mins into the calling I look over to Mike and see 4 coyotes coming down the tree line to our right. I stop calling and whisper to Mike to have him be ready as they are starting to turn to go into the grass. They are about 30yds away at the most. I do not know how they did not see us. As they get out to the side of Mike I let him know. He picks up the rifle and starts popping rounds off. He wounds 2 out of the 4 dogs. I am trying to catch up with the other 2 but they get between me and a ton of cattle so I can't risk shooting a cow. I look at Mikes 2 dogs and see they still very alive. I shoot one and drop it. Then I shot the other which had made it another 100yds into the pasture. It was an awesome hunt and look forward to this weekend.

That is my Coyote hunting story and can't wait to get back out there. I have now got access to a few more pastures to help get rid of these damn calf eaters.

Cool story and good shooting (at times) :) It is tough hitting those turds at UKD in the heat of the moment and the hair is flying. Last time home, i shot at one from the barn; he jumped me i think. He made funny jump when i shot and didn't leave at mach 6. I thought I winged him and knew he had several hundred feet to cover to get out of my back pasture. So my fat ass hopped the fence and took off at a trot to catch him in the pasture? I see him hit the fenceline and I'm huffing & puffing like a $2 whore at the end of payday. He comes right back out chasing after a rabbit he jumped, so I snapped up the bang stick and missed him again. Shit happens, as long as your/her place is a food source; they'll be back.

One important lesson been learned..........you've been jumped twice too close to shoot yo long range whacka. I always have a side arm or shotgun with me for the times they come in over your back to get to the caller.

You'd be surprised how many of those 4 would've died at the hands of my suppressed P22. Once you educate them, it gets harder and harder to call them in until they just won't come.

Cheers,
Breeze

Sounds like fun regardless. Maybe you could try baiting them? IDK if that would work, since I hear they are not a dumb animal. I've been wanting to hunt Coyote, but don't have a venue, or a clue. it looks like you have a decent spot. I bet any neighboring ranches would give you permission to kill Coyotes on their land. People raising livestock really seem to dislike those mangy dogs! Keep at it, and I bet you'll tear 'em up!

RDSII 64 - There is plenty of hunting and lots of shooting here in Nevada... I believe that in eastern Nevada they even have a huge festival where it is devoted strictly to coyote hunting

I'd bet these guys were year and a half old. Probably 30lbs.

Laying on your side shooting running coyotes was a good time!!

Nice work, this is a good time of year to thin them out. I tried several calls before finding Kerry Carver, now the Carver calls come calling with me while the others sit in a storage bin in my garage. Keep up the good work!

Congrats on the yote whacking! Welcome to your new addiction btw. For some great videos on coyote hunting check out Oneil Ops and Bucking the Odds videos on YouTube. Kerry makes some great calls and that lighter one almost looks like it could be his stabilized cholla cactus which are awesome. Keep up the good work!
