Gunsmithing Case head seperation Remington 700 help

Take note, OP changed bolts and fixed his problem. Obviously this doesn't directly answer the exact reason for his previous case failures, but it does give some insight....I'm wondering what the boltface to chamber shoulder difference is between the two bolts.

Funny thing is, the first bolt headspaced correctly. Even if the 2nd bolt created a less than minimum headspace situation, it shouldn't eliminate the head separation if the brass is not the problem. Still waiting for the case measurements.

This is true. My consideration was how the barrel was reamed. I wasn't clear on if the barrel was a factory chamber or if it had been set back etc... If it was rechambered or set back incorrectly and the back end of the reamer was off center, That could possibly open the mouth of the bore an extra .XXX and not support the area just above the web. Some of theose cases look large above the failure. Whatever the issue is it affected both resized and factory brass. So I'm thinking the cases are not the problem. It headspaces good. all of the other dimensions are good. Maybe the bolt head and the counter bore diameters need to be compared, if that has not already been dismissed. What else can it be?

Edit. After looking at the print it would be .010 loose. But it should not be say .020.

I don't think anything was reamed. Correct me if I'm wrong. Have you ever seen a chamber that wouldn't fire a virgin case without failure?

Factory bbl installed. Factory chamber.

Sounds like I didn't digest some of the information that was posted. Strikes me funny that the rifle headspaced but had multiple case failures. Axial demensions good diametric not so good was my reasoning. Let me follow rather than confuse. Keep us tuned in for the results.

I'm sorry for the lack of updates & replies as I'm out of state on vacation and I won't be home until the end of next week. When I get home I will be able to take measurements but now I can only report on the last time I fired it. I was able to shoot 50 rounds in the last session and all of the fired cases were perfect. The rifle proved to be pretty accurate for a hunting rifle as I was able to shoot a .53" 5-shot group with my handload (168gr. AMAX over 41.3gr IMR3031 2.835"OAL) and .77" 5-shot group with Lake City 147gr. ball ammo. I can only think that the original bolt nose wasn't fully supporting the case in the counter bore and the replacement bolt corrected the problem. If anyone is interested in taking a chance with the factory bolt assembly I would be willing to let it go for 125.00 shipped as I have no use for it and would like to recoup some of the cost on the replacement bolt.

No reaming was necessary so that was one less thing that I could've screwed up. The barrel & chamber was as it left Remington.

The chamber supports the case. Methinks if the orig. bolt headspaced as you stated, the prob is your brass. Enjoy your vacation!
