Yeah, I was thinking either Kimber or Para Ord might make something like that in a lower price range, IF they still make them. It'll be at least a grand no matter which you choose, probably more, but when it comes to 1911's, that price is about the cutoff point for reliability or working quality it seems, from what I've read anyway. Other folks have gone cheaper, but then spent as much or more to get their $600 1911 working like they wanted, and still I bet nobody would want to pay more than $400 used just because of the name on the pistol, were they to try and sell.
Personally, I carry Glocks, Glocks and Smith revolvers, and if you want a good, simple, cheap, accurate and narrow grip yet high cap., they are a good choice and are reliable as hell. I carry a G27 a lot, the tiny subcompact, but you could get the 13rd. G23 and have a good compact, or the 15rd. G22 and have a full size. I can get 'em for $425, NIB w/3 mags with my mil/vet discount. $500 something otherwise. But for $600 (once you put XS or Trijicon or adj. Meprolight tritium sights on it) you can't get a better carry pistol, IMO, not one that will be accurate and will work that well out of the box with any ammo, under any conditions. Obviously, I bet my life on these pistols, I have several and I'd feel comfortable carrying any of them.
Some folks like other brands, some might actually be better than Glock now, but I've just got a lot of time with 'em and can speak to say they work well. M&P, FN, Springfield. They all make good striker fired weapons, and some have external safeties for those that desire them. Most hold even more rounds than Glocks do (in 9mm anyway).
Considering you want a .40, there are just better options, IMO, more reliable, for less money and including night sights for less money. That's all I'm getting at. And if you plan on carrying it, then anything would have to be better than a Taurus 1911 --I just can't see myself betting my life on a weapon that intricate, but made to be low priced. I just can't, not when a Glock is around the same price but is a high tier, or top shelf, carry weapon, in any of the US configurations or calibers, provided you change out the sights.
G35 and G24 are longer, if you can deal with it. I have the G17L, it generates .357 velocities (1500+fps, 124gr. +P) but with little recoil and 17rds. Thinking of cutting the slide and putting a recessed reflex sight on it, a small dot. It is very accurate.
Another to consider, that often gets overlooked, is the Smith and Wesson 3rd gen autos. I have a Smith 1006 10mm, but you'd want the .40. I think the 4013 was compact and had a DA/SA trigger and an aluminum frame, so it was lighter. There were others with steel, etc., they came in all kinds of configurations. These were the pistols the .40 was made for, but Glock beat them to it in production, so those got sold and Smith's 3rd gen line tanked due to Glock changing the playing field with striker fired weapons using plastic frames. Anyway, these are VERY well made handguns for VERY low prices. But don't let that fool you, they are most certainly the best bang for the buck when it comes to DA/SA semi auto handguns. Check 'em out.
Those are the best price savers I can think of without ending up with something not reliable. I'm sure others have some to add. But low priced 1911's in .40? Kimber and those, then the more expensive STI's and such, that's it.
Good luck!
