My son has been hunting with a youth model 700 in .243 for the past 2 years. This year I decided to have a rifle built on the action. I dropped it off with Clay Spencer to have the action trued and have the barrel installed. We used a Spencer Barrel which he cut and chambered in .260, 8 twist, sporter weight. We cut the barrel to 20 inches to keep the weight down as much as possible. He had a MCM Classic stock so we decided to use it than wait 5 months for a different stock.
I had this built for him to take to Montana with us. I wanted something accurate, light weight with enough punch for Mulies. Weight without optics is 6.4 lbs.

This rifle will end up with a something like a Vortex PST 4-16 SFP for him. The rings and bases are Nightforce ultra lights. In the future as he grows we will put a varmint contour barrel and a different stock for target and groundhogs.
My son and I will be back at Clays for load development in a week or two and I will update with results.

More pics!

You beat me to my second post Joe!

He already does, I mocked the scope up today and he has been all over it.

Nice looking rig. Is the barrel like a #3 contour? Should be a sweet shooter. - Todd

Shtrrdy - its a Remington sporter contour. Same as the SPS.

J - I'm going to try some hunting style bullets in the 140 range and see where it gets us. I've been investigating the loads others are shooting for hunting. We will also try some match loads just to see the results. As with any barrel this small, three rounds will probably be the max before we start seeing temp signs. If you have any hunting loads you'd like to share, I'm all ears.
Velocity may require us to use lighter bullets as well since the barrel is only 20". I will opt for the 22"when I switch to the varmint contour. I will post velocity and results when I get the load developed.

Id imagine H4350, RE17 or H4831sc would be the top powder choices, unfortunately I dont load for the 260 or I would definitely share them with you. Nothing wrong with using a 140AMAX on a muley, those "Match" bullets kill very well, too.

When are we going out to zero the rifle? That came out really nice I am sure J. will really love shooting it.

Thanks J. We will get to the range soon, baseball is still in full swing...

As much as I love the big dogs, there is a soft place in my hart for the usefulness of a well made, compact and lightweight bolt rifle. Well done!

That is a super nice hunting rig. Congratulations on that and more importantly raising your son with a great father son relationship. The times that me and my dad hunted and went shooting together are still some of the best of my life. Enjoy these times with your son, they are awesome. How old is your son if you don't mind me asking?

He is 11. We have gone out west hunting to off shore fishing in the Gulf Stream. He never complains or gets bored when we are outdoors. The guide in Montana said he was the best he had ever seen, we hiked between 10 and 12 miles one day tracking a deer and my son never said a negative word, hell I complained more than he did!

I find I would rather watch him shoot the deer or catch the fish than do it myself. These are truly awesome times!

I think this rifle will be a perfect hunting rifle for him. I like it so much I may have another one built for me in the future.

Well, damn... what to adopt a 27 year-old? I can't get my old man into guns at all. Built him a 20" AR on a Seekins lower and BCM upper... I guess he liked it.

Can lead a horse to water...

Update!
Finally got out for some load development with the new optic, a Vortex PST 2.5-10. I used 130gr Berger VLD and 123 Amax, both with IMR 4350. This is with once fired Federal brass.
Temps were almost 90 with high humidity. This rifle was built for hunting and with weight in mind as its for my 12 year old son. It has a Remington sporter contour barrel and heat, especially in these temps, will be a factor. This should improve in the colder temps of hunting season.

We prepped the brass and trimmed to 2.025, set seating depth to magazine length (2.83 COAL).

In this first pic, we started with 37.5 grains and the 130 VLD's. This is two groups shot on the same target. The outer holes are three shots with 37.5 grains (they make the outer most triangle). We let the barrel cool and shot three more with 37 gr. Those are the three inside the first three.
There is some room for improvement and will update with the next round of development.

This next photo is the 123 Amax. This is using 37.5 grains of IMR 4350 at a COAL of 2.83. The top hole are the first and second rounds of a three shot string. The one hole that is out is the third shot. After it came out we felt the barrel and could not keep our hands on it. We decided to stay where we were and let the barrel cool off. I loaded one more to check the load and put it in the same hole as the first two. That confirms the load is consistent and barrel heat was the factor in the third shot.

This is a pic of the same target as before measuring the spread if heat was not a factor. The third shot is after the barrel cooled, coming off the gun and light changed.

We did not use the chrony on any of these loads and know the loads are on the low end. As the weather cools off I will be looking for the higher node and will update then.

Way cool! Nice work...

If it were me, I wouldn't bother with a heavy tube and chunkier stock when he gets older. A well bedded gun with a good barrel will shoot lights out, regardless of barrel diameter. A light, well balanced rifle is going to make the hunting all that much more enjoyable for anybody, and especially a kid. I lugged around a heavy barreled Ruger on my first few elk hunts and it sucked really bad.

Just my $.02.....

Nice rifle, like the Sporter at 20 and would not go over 21 or 21.5 for stiffness, personally. Some say lightweight, well for ME, I'd throw on a 6x Leupold of choosing, prob a M1 or CDS conversion, or at least just an LRD reticle. I'd sub a 2.5-8 or 2-7 VX in same config. That would take c/o anything I'd want with that rifle.

Velocity? 20" will give you ALL you need to kill to at least 500 yds w shot placement, further than that young lad will likely shoot anytime soon. Lastly, on the loads, perhaps you are downloading, but that 260 w/130 can go up to about 43-44 grains in RP or Lapua brass. I do believe your Fed brass will hold 1-2 gr less, perhaps more diff than that, someone may can chime in. If its recoil reduction I understand, but you did mention speed. Sure your loads above, very accurate btw, will kill easily to 300-400 yds on Mulies.

Good Hunting, Nice rifle, enjoy and make many memories!
