Will 375 H&H collet dies neck size cases for a 375 WBY?

I use 243 collet dies for neck-sizing my 243ai. Can I do the same thing for a bolt-action 375 wby - use 375 H&H Lee Collet dies, as the H&H case is the parent case for the 375WBY?

Thanks.

slm9s,

Depends on whether or not the shoulders of the case interfere with the corresponding area of the die. Given the sharper shoulders of the 375 Wby over its parent 375 H&H, it may. It would certainly be worth a try, though. I don't know just how much clearance Lee allows in their collet dies, but I'd say go ahead and give it a try. If you feel any contact once the case enters the die, stop and back off. Unless you try to force something, you shouldn't create any damage or problems here.

I think a lot of people should probably reevaluate exactly why they choose to neck size these classes of cartridges. The benchrest crowd can neck size a couple dozen times without any problem whatsoever, not withstanding the precision type of action used and the meticulously selected cases.

Anyway, it can be done, factory chambers being what they are, but is it always advisable? The whole theory being that the case is already fireformed in the specific chamber and now all that needs to be done is resizing the neck area so it has the proper tension to hold the bullet. This procedure doesn't allow for brass flow and stretching which can be cumulative.

I guess what I'm getting at, having hunted the dark continent, is the whole controlled feed, slick chambering required for dangerous game and why one needs a 375Weatherby Magnum for such pursuits. As far as I am concerned, full length resizing is the way to go, in leu of the best factory cartridges money can buy. JMHO. BB

I agree with Buzz. Long case life in a hunting for maybe dangerous game is not an integral part of the process. ABSOLUTE reliability is. Discussion over.(However, to answer the question, probably will work. For only $20 or less...try it out. Just don't be my back up guide when I flub a shot with a charging-----------------------fill in the blanks.)

Thanks guys. I just purchased it and its my first big bore (other than my braked 50) and I was thinking of an economical way to shoot it to see how I liked it. I've since found a deal on some FL dies so I'm good.
And the purpose for the rifle will be Elk here in WA state, at least for the forseeable future.
Thanks again.

slm9s,

Don't forget, you can also use bullets intended for the 375 Winchester lever gun, so long as you use reduced loads that deliver velocities for which those bullets were designed. Great way to use it for smaller game like deer, get used to the gun with a mild, reduced recoil load, and just generally get some more use out of the rifle. Never a bad thing!

Yeah, I've had some sr4759 for a LONG time that I got almost free, and a guy I bought some brass from gave me a reduced load for the 375 wby.
