Target and drilling ?

Hello everyone,

I wanted to look into getting some paper targets I can use at 100 yards which simulate longer distances to train also any good drill targets or even some good drills I can preform by myself. I have google this and really couldn't find anything saw a few drills on YouTube but would like some input. Want to do more then just shoot for groups with my reloads and really start learning to use my turrets. I am limited to a 100 yard indoor range right now, some one here also told me about a 200 yd outdoor I haven't checked out yet. I picked up a data book from storm tactical and should receive that soon, if I use say a 100 yd target that simulates say 500 yd at the outdoor location at 100 yd will that dope be correct?

Thanks in advance and be well,
Mike

For all-purpose shooting improvement, search on here for "dot drill" targets. There is a lot you can do with them to improve your shooting, as you already recognize the need to get away from shooting groups.

I don't know of a target that simulates distance. But, you can take a big piece of cardboard and put a bunch of randomly placed 1 inch dots on it. Circle one at the bottom in the center to be the aiming point. Put it at 100 yards. Measure from it to the other dots, then engage those dots by dialing on your scope while aiming at the circled aiming point. While this does not simulate distance, it gets you to start learning about your reticle and your turrets. It also allows you to confirm that your scope is tracking properly. That's about all I can come up with for 100 yards, maybe someone else will have more.

Good luck.

PS - what part of NY are you from?

Thanks for the response Sled, I will give that drill a try. I live in Orange County , in the town of Goshen.
Been trying to find a location that is set up for longer distances no luck yet. I even went to a few farms and asked but no cigar. So trying to work with what I got for now. There is a great 1000 yd club only $50 bucks a year one of the guys from here told me about but it's 4 hours and some change away in PA. So that's why I am trying to find another way to practice.

OK. We have a range up here that goes to 300, but that's a long drive for that amount of distance. Not really worth it.

Check this place out:
NHRPC

Range to 600 yards. And should be a lot closer to you than 4 hours? I'm guessing the other place you mentioned for 1000 yards was MCSA (http://www.mifflincosportsmens.com/)? It is a great range, but yes, it is a long drive.

That one is just under 4 hrs as well from me , but thanks for the link does look like a nice location. You are absolutely correct about the 1000 yd range that is the one I was referring too. Seems like my area ranges and clubs are more geared towards hunting and 3d archery.

Watch for posts by fargo007 in the Tac Comp section of the forum. He / Black Hats Training run classes and matches at both locations. The matches at NHRPC are a good place to get started if you haven't shot matches before. Taking one of their precision rifle classes before a match would be a good idea too.

I feel you pain as far as traveling goes. I'm just under 4 hours to NHRPC and right about 4 hours to MCSA.

There is also a range in Factoryville, PA that I think goes out to 400 yards. Probably not all that close to you. I think it is Top Predator on here that is arranging some informal match/practice days. I haven't been able to make one of those days yet, they always fall on another match day.

Keep in mind you can practice almost all you need for marksmanship at 100 yards. Shooting longer should be to confirm data and learn wind reading. It's great shooting long, but don't get discouraged if you can't find a place.

I actually have been looking at classes , that will be my first step for sure. May take the ride at least once a month or every other to one of the locations you recommend after I take a class. I found an affordable place offering a long range class in PA Wolf Precision any word on them as far as it being a good class to take? Until then will punch paper at 100 yd and use the drill you suggested and the ones that I was able to find.

Thanks again and be well
Mike

I practice for NRA LR using the MR-31 target, a 600 yard target reduced for shooting at 100 yards. It demands perfection of marksmanship for perfect scores. It also permits me to easily see bullet holes with my 27 power spotting scope so that I can evaluate the call/strike corollary. That permits me to appraise my work in progress, adjusting for any inconsistencies in my position which, by producing unpredictable recoil resistance, will corrupt my zero. At any rate, that's what I do. Knowing how to properly adjust your scope for distance, wind, and weather conditions, which is apparently what you want to learn, is best addressed on full course distances since mil ranging and the trajectory of your bullet does not comply with a reduced course concept without a lot of equations which will actually complicate progress.

Thank you will find that target and use it at my next range trip.
After giving it some taught I realized that my original idea would not work with the targets that simulate longer distances, i would get the correct site picture but at the end of the day the bullet drop will still be set for a hundred yards.

Thanks and be well,
Mike

Mike,

I've taken classes with both Fargo007 (Black Hat Training) and with Jamie (Wolf Precision). Both are very good classes. Every instructor has their own style. I recommend talking with both and deciding which you feel most comfortable with. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Good luck!

You're welcome.

And another option for you:
http://www.snipershide.com/shooting/training-classes/196120-long-gun-training-llc-western-ny.html

I have not taken a class with him yet - I hope to be able to get one in this year yet (I just have to convince the wife it is a good cause!). I have shot with him at some local F-Class matches when I was first getting started, and he was very helpful. Not necessarily closer for you, but sometimes schedules dictate what classes we can take, and this gives you more options.

Thanks again, I am always on that mission with my wife.. Just had to do it for the scope I picked up..
