Ok Here' The Scoop...

Ive been reloading for awhile now and follow safe practices, almost too safe. Well, I this time around I got bit. My .308 loads were running hot on low charges (40grs of IMR4064) no matter how low I went, they would still make the bolt hard to pull back. The issue was recently resolved when I switched brass, the problem seemed to only occur when I used 1x fired PPU brass. Once I switched to Hornady Match and Lapua, my problems vanished and I found a load my rifle and I love.

Anyways, the issue here is that apparatly I had one of thise bad rounds snuck into my batch of good ammo and I had a primer blow out! Thank GOD it wasnt catastrophic but I do notice the bolt doesnt look right. I was able to shoot off 3 more good rounds afterwards and it was spot on accurate but, I have a feeling something is not right. Ive done a little homework and It appears to be extractor related from the little research ive done so far... Id like to know if this is repairable and where do I send it to, how much $$ etc. Enclosed are some photos. I could be wrong here and I hope that is the case but if not, I just hope whatever damage was captured in these pictures and the right person can spot it.

Thank You for your help in advance.

Are you talking about the little burned spot on the ejector? It can be replaced easily and cheaply but if it still ejects fine and doesn't stick why replace it? I see it got the boltface a touch too.

I agree.. but it is a little bent kindof. I guess I didnt capture it too well with my cell phone camera but its clearly a little bent outward kindof, again its hard to see in the current pictures.. ill try post some more when I return from work in the next 6 hours.

I figure I could clean uo the face and have an upgraded extractor in the process... that was my thoughts but again, I want experienced person's inout on this matter and not my experience or lack thereof hence the inquiry.

I have a bolt question, my rifle is a Rem 700 action and a Pacific Tool Works one piece bolt. The action worked good with my old bolt, but the new one piece seem to be off on the bolt face. When I have a round in the chamber the bolt will close but it is extremely stiff, with out a round in the chamber it is very smooth. I did some measuring and then shaved .003 off the back of a empty case, then the bolt and action worked smooth again so I do not think it is in the Lug fitting. Do the pros here know if I should ream the barrel .003 or take it off the front of the bolt face with a lathe?

Please make your own post and dont hijack mine.. thanx.

I thought you had your answer already, did not mean to cause a problem. I will do that!

No i didnt and no problem at all, ive been guilty of doing it in the past myself. Also, youll get more help with your own thread than chiming in on someone else's because the issue is completely unrelated to the topic.

Hard to imagine an ejector getting bent by a little gas leakage. I've pierced many a primer and not ever experienced a bent ejector. Not saying it couldn't happen, but as I said I've not experienced that before.

What is an upgraded extractor going to do for you? Does a functional Remington extractor really need to be upgraded? Can we really call it an upgrade when the Remington does it's job as designed?

Flea, you can order the ejector plunger & use an old casing to depress the old one. Knock out the roll pin and put the new plunger in and put the roll pin back in. Its about a 5 min or less job with the right tools.

If by an upgraded extractor you mean have a sako installed, save your money, If you bolt runs fine now. Buy a one piece PTG when you re-barrel it and run with that.

Well I took it to a local gunsmith today. He says the bolt fave needs to be cleaned up as it was tweaked and the extractor is screwed and needs to be replaced. Im going with the same setup and also gonna tweak the firing pin as it ia hitting my primers a little too deep for comfort and this "may" happen again so we decided to tweak that to prevent an overstriked primer. Dude was oretty kool too, $40 labor and then parts which we all know is cheap. Hopefully he will have it back to me next week as promised.. I miss oit on this weeks shoot tho.

The bolt face looks fine to me. Clean it with a toothbrush and solvent and those brass marks should disappear. My bolt face looks like the surface of the moon and still works fine.
