I have an AR 15 with 20" barrel and want to buy a scope for it but have no idea on what scope to get. I will be shooting out to 300 yds maybe a little more. Can you guys recommend a decent scope that will not break the bank ?

Depends on the bank. My bank and Donald Trump's bank are completely different things, and we have no clue what side of the spectrum you are on. "Break the bank" has no numeric value.

I would like to stay between 2 and 3 hundred.

SWFA perfect, but may have difficulty with eye relief and cheek weld depending on your stock. Don't forget you'll also need a set of rings.

If you need a mount setup too, SWFA has several scope and mount bundles that save some cash:

Leatherwood 1-4x24 CMR Tactical 30mm Rifle Scope Kit
Nikon 2-8x32 M223 Riflescope Kit
Bushnell 1-4x24 AR Optics 30mm Rifle Scope & Mount Kit
Redfield 3-9x42 Battlezone Rifle Scope & Mount Kit
Nikon 3-9x40 P223 Riflescope Kit

If a fixed power would work for you, the SWFA SS 6x or 10x would be the best quality scope option, hands down.
SWFA SS 6x42 Tactical Riflescope

For a super cheap option that has lots of "tactical" features and actually gets pretty good reviews, the Primary arms 4-14x is FFP and Mil/mil:
