Yep, a Dick's Sporting Goods special Rem. 700-V in .308

Here's my last 5 round shot group. I guess I'm going to have to start shooting my dot drill target because some people might think this one bogus.

What scope are you using with your R700?

Vortex Viper PST; 6-24X; FFP; Mil-Mil
Badger 20 MOA base
Seekins rings
Jewell trigger
B&C A5 fully adjustable tactical stock
Harris bi-pod
AAC "Cyclone" suppressor

You're right, Randoman5, I guess I had just the "rifle" in mind, not all of the acoutrements . . . . buy, hey, it's a good starting point, nonetheless!!!
I'm happy!!!! And, being a grumpy, old fart, I'm rarely happy.

Killer Spade 13, I think you went way over the "less than 1000 bucks for the entire package concept" as your scope alone is somewhere between 750-950. Now if the OP is not including a scope, you are GTG (suppressor not included..lol). To the OP question, I think it would be rather difficult to have a complete rifle system for extended ranges that comes in under 1000 bucks. While you can get a cheap rifle for 300 or so, having a decent scope that is worth anything at over 1000 yards is not going to be cheap. Lets say for the sake of argument you spend 300 on a rifle, 400 on a scope, another 100 on base and rings and another 100 on a bipod. While the rifle may shoot out to and beyond 1000 yards (depending upon what caliber you select) I think you would be very unsatisfied with the performance and function of the equipment. A better option may be to find a used rifle that will give you a little more bang for the buck but in the long distance game, you gotta pay to play. Save up and move out to this range when you can better afford the equipment and the supplies to feed it. The problem you will soon discover is that you want a better scope, and then you want a better rifle, and then you want a better scope mount, and then you want a better bipod....etc.

Well hey, $3350 is still a lot better than $3550.

They had one of those at Dick's when I went there on Black Friday but I got there too late. So mad.

Gentlemen, I defer to your lambasting and censure. As I said, I guess my mind was just set on the "rifle".
You are so right, Hairball. A GOOD piece of glass is, without a doubt, second only to the rifle in the equation.
You can't hit what you can't see.

ok so this is the situation i have a few rifles the best is a rem 700 243 win 26" 1:9.125 twist. b&c A2 stock beaded timney 510 vtac low steel rings EGW 20 minute base millett lrs 1 mil/mao. vs. rem770 300 wm 1:10 twist 24" tube beaded in a plastiic stock free floated from the head of the chamber forward. stock 770 base millett tactical rings and a hawk eclipse 30sf 4-16. so what would be my best bet. the 243 wont stbilize the 105 amax or bthp. so stuck at a bc of around .4 which is right at 1k. effective range. or the crappy cheap 300wm thats shooting sub inch groups and can be effective to 1600 before it goes transonic. like should i shoot them both or learn one by heart.

Sure you can do a sub $1K rig. Get a 700 SPS 1:10 twist .308 at Dicks (*shutter*). Get a new or used Bushnell Tactical Elite 3200 10x mil/mil and get budget rings and you can get a weaver base for like cheap. You'll come in right around $1K. If you want to go $1200 get the side focus SWFA Super Sniper 10x for $399. Still do budget rings and weaver base. All set.

10x is great out to 1K yards.

I'm not a rich man and I'm also a bit of a tightass sometimes(read most times). I have 2 rifles that fall into this category:

Browning A-bolt 300wsm $500(on sale at Bass Pro)
Nikon Prostaff 4-12x40 $169 (on sale at SWFA)
EGW 20 moa base $40
Caldwell 6-9" bipod $35
Rings? $20
Total $764

T/C Venture 243 Win $479
Nikon Prostaff 4-12x40 $189
Base was on the rifle
Rings? $20
Bipod Caldwell $35

Total $723

I have hit accurately enough at 1k with the Browning 1.5 moa With the 243 it has been a bit more difficult. I run out of adjustment with the scope to dial 1k. Also with the 243, there are very few(read no) aftermarket parts. I'm confident that I could hit 1k regular with it if I had a 20 moa base. I'm not going to complain much because both are hunting rifles first and long range rigs second. Their first job is to make the ONE shot and be done.

Keeping with the 1000 or less request, Howa is offering a package deal on several caliber, the following is for their 308:This Package includes everything shown in the photo.

This Howa rifle is the flagship of the Howa line. This rifle has all the features that make Howa great, including a Hogue Overmolded™ Stock which is soft rubber over an aluminum skeleton, providing a positive grip in all weather conditions, reduced shooting fatigue and high resistance to most gun solvents. Barrels are free floated for maximum accuracy.

Package includes a Nikko Sterling Targetmaster 4-16x44 with rings and one piece base. Scope MSRP $374.00

Also, includes a 10 round detachable magazine and 6"-9" bipod. Magazine MSRP $98.00. Bipod MSRP $84.00
********The entire package is up for sale at Bud's Gun Shop for $699.00***** leaves you about 300 for ammo.

After reading Hosted's post below, I think he has made a great point, $699.00 add a good timney trigger, and a drag bag! I have always found Howa's to shoot very well, I know a lot of guys will go crazy when I state, that dollar for dollar-Howas is one of the best made rifles for sale (remember dollar for dollar).

Here is what I use. I started piecing everything together as I got money and while it's a 223 and I only shoot to 600 I've learned a ton shooting it. I'd imagine with a bigger caliber it would be possible to shoot to 1000 but a better barrel sure would help at that distance. Sorry, I don't have any pics, but here's what it is. All of these prices included shipping or taxes for everything.

Savage Stevens 223 $300
Choate Ultimate Varmint $100 Not the best but got it cheap and it's a pretty solid stock for the price.
Stock Bedding Material $40
Weaver 1 Piece Base $35
Burris Signature Zee Rings $35
Burris Ring Inserts $15
Weaver T36 Scope $350 Bought used but a decent fixed power scope.

This is where I'm at now at $875. It's not going to win any competitions but I can compete in some local ones and learn. When I feel it's holding me back my adjusted stock trigger will be replaced $100. I will update the barrel when I get more serious for approximately $300. That Howa looks like a nice rig!

I used to. I started out with a Rem 700 Varmint in .22-250 about 14 years ago. Weaver V24 scope with Leupold base and rings. Total invested was about $850.00 give or take. Only shot it to about 600 for just over 4K rounds. I was lucky to get a real shooter right out of the box. It's favorite round was the 45 grain Winchester white box ammo. When I shot all the time and did my part I could hit push pins at 100. It currently has a Bartlein barrel and has had the action trued by GAP.

you could go rem 700 varmint (600) SWFA ss scope (300) egw 20 moa base (50?) seekins rings (120) $1070 1000yard gun but you still need a stock B&C is 220, but they are important to have a stable platform (stock) so 1290 with stock but you still need a trigger timney (150) so that's $1440 with optics that's a great beginners rifle to learn on before going all out custom. later on you could go true your action, blueprint it, and get it rebarreled in a caliber or your choice, twist and length.

ok so this is the situation i have a few rifles the best is a rem 700 243 win 26" 1:9.125 twist. b&c A2 stock beaded timney 510 vtac low steel rings EGW 20 minute base millett lrs 1 mil/mao. vs. rem770 300 wm 1:10 twist 24" tube beaded in a plastiic stock free floated from the head of the chamber forward. stock 770 base millett tactical rings and a hawk eclipse 30sf 4-16. so what would be my best bet. the 243 wont stbilize the 105 amax or bthp. so stuck at a bc of around .4 which is right at 1k. effective range. or the crappy cheap 300wm thats shooting sub inch groups and can be effective to 1600 before it goes transonic. like should i shoot them both or learn one by heart.
Just curious; are you using these performance specs based on your own trials/tests with the rifles/bullets stated, or are you basing them solely off of calculators and/or what people have said on the internet? If the latter, I would suggest going out and trying both to see what happens. You might be surprised. For example, I've seen several people claim that a 1:9.125 twist .243 will not stabilize a 105 grain A-max, yet my Savage model 10 certainly does and it has a 1:9.25 twist factory barrel. Of course, most would assume that the .300 WM will trump the .243 at those ranges and they would probably be right. But, until you actually try them to see what works, you just won't know for sure.

I'm not one that believes Money Makes the Shooter:

Here is an example: My Model 70 Winchester, Douglas Prem Barrel, Bishop Stock, Weaver T-10, Weaver Mounts and Rings. I built the rail for the hand stop. I didn't count the price of the iron sights (Redfield Olympic) they were gifted by the Guard (excess). I shot this rifle in a heck of a lot of 1000 yard any rifle/any sight and any rifle/iron sight rifles. I got a deal on the action. I bought 6 of them for a total price of $235.

Here is the brake down:

Action 39.17
Barrel 90
stock 85
Hand Stop 15
Ring and Mounts 30
Scope used 140
Sling 60
Total $459.17

I did the work, the NG paid for the reamer and HS gages.

The gun still shoots and shoots good.

Also, in 1000 yard matches you have the Service Rifle Category. Again a sub-1000 rifle. I bought this M1A in 1977 for $295. Since I was shooting for the guard, they funded the conversion to a Super Match. The work was done by Gene Barnett (Barnett Barrels) who was an armor for the NGB MTU.

Best scores I ever fired at 1000 yards was this rifle. This rifle also got all my Distinguished Rifle points and badge.

Here is my latest, but I didn't build it, its one of the AMU built Model 70 target rifles in 308 that I got from the CMP for $640. It came with the blocks but no sights, I use the same sights/scope I use on my 300 WM 1000 yard gun. This I use on "across the course" and 1000 yard matches.

Again, I don't think its the cost of the rifle, I shot a 1000 yard match at Ft Lewis one year where the winner (from the WA ARNG) showed up with his Rem 700 243 hunting rifle saying he wanted to try it out. He whooped us all in the any rifle/any sight match. It was totally stock except he replaced the front sling swivel to take the 1 1/4 M1907 Tanner type sling.

Here is my budget 1K rifle.

Savage Model 11 Hog Hunter - 20" 1:10t barrel - Accutrigger- Tupperware stock - $550 OTD locally
B&C Tactical Stock - $240 at Stocky's
JP Enterprise Benny Coolie compensator - $85 at Midway
DNZ Game Reaper one peice rings - $60 at Midway
Primary Arms 4-14-44 FFP Mil-dot scope - $229 at PA
Harris Swivel Bi-pod - $100 at Midway
Accushot Monopod - $79 at Midway

$1350 total with all the kit.

Getting .75 MOA at the bench @ 100. 8" steel plates at 600 are easy. No problem with 18" plates at 1K. I'm shooting handloads with 155 SMK and 175 SMK over Power Pro 2000MR at 2750 FPS.

I just bought a howa 1500 target master combo for a guy that wants to start shooting with me. He used my rifle the first time out and that's all it took for me to have enough of that. The Howa comes with a 20" fluted heavy barrel in 308 with a nikko sterling 4-14x scope for $800. I told him he could use it and if he wanted to get more serious he could buy it from me. I have no doubt that it will be able to make some hits at 1k with GMM 175's.

Does anyone out there shoot budget rifles for long range <1000 dollars

700 ADL - 400

Douglas Barrel - 325

Used McMillan A3 (with BDL bottom metal) - 450

Vortex Viper HSLR 4-16x44 - 550
Oh shit almost forgot - 60$ to have the gun put together.

Dope on this rifle to 1000 with 168gr BTHP. Yes it's over 1000 but not by too much.

A Remington 700 AAC-SD 20" .308 + Falcon Menace 4-14x50 FFP SCOPE will be just about right to get you out to 1K for $1K.

I shot my first 1000 yard match with a Remington SPS Tactical with a 10x SWFA SS scope just to see if it would reach out that far. Stayed on paper (mainly in the black) with hand loads; however, I doubt I could ever be competitive with that combination.

The rest of the folks with budget rifles at that match had really tough days. Fortunately, I hadn't invested money in that rifle for the purposes on competition.

The cheapest 1K rifle setup that is competitive at 1K that I have seen (I am sure that there are more) is the Savage 12 F/TR with a Weaver 36x scope and a Harris bi-pod. Definitely not high speed low drag, but with a decent hand load, it will shoot better than most of us.

Yep, a Dick's Sporting Goods special Rem. 700-V in .308

Here's my last 5 round shot group. I guess I'm going to have to start shooting my dot drill target because some people might think this one bogus.

Lord that's an amazing grouping. Did you true the action or do anything special besides for a scope? Like a stock new barrel anything? If not you sir are lucky!

Im assuming less scope

Howa m-1500 308 re-action + DPMS cryo heavy flute #2 lapua contour = 650
SAC mark gordon bolt work helical flute and knob = 300
EGW 20 MOA 1 peice = 50
kept the hogue

One of my rifles is a Savage Model 10 PC with a SWFA SS(10x42) scope. With the bipod and stock pack, it's just over $1000. I've had her banging steal out to +900yds.

Tikka T3 lite 308 $550
EGW 20 moa base $40
SWFA SS 12x $300
30mm rings $50
Harris Bi-pod $100

Total: $1040

My long range -1k setup
1. Savage model 11VT from Dicks 476.98
2. Choate tactical stock from EAB co 210.00
3. Weaver Kaspa Tactical 3x12x44 scope from optic planet 213.00
4. Weaver 20MOA base and tactical six hole 30mm rings from Amazon.com 59.00
5. Harris 6"-9" bipod free from a trade
Total 958.98 just put this together, will have to sight in and see how it all works

I started with your basic concept, but went a little over budget, ~$1100

Mossberg MVP Varmint
EGW 20 MOA base
EGW Rings
Millett 4-16 TRS1

I shoot the 77 smk at 2700 fps.

I'm new to the ELR game. Went 20% on a steel IDPA target at 1075 yards the first time I tried it, I'm up to 66% in ideal conditions after a few tries. I'm still working on getting the velocity up and velocity spread down.

It started as an experiment in shooting through the transonic. Now it's just cheap giggles.

Vortex Viper PST; 6-24X; FFP; Mil-Mil
Badger 20 MOA base
Seekins rings
Jewell trigger
B&C A5 fully adjustable tactical stock
Harris bi-pod
AAC "Cyclone" suppressor

My R700-V is glass-bedded in a B&C A5 stock with. A Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP MOA/MOA scope with Leupy STD rings and bases. great shooter.

FH

PS-I've got a spare B&C M40 stock with BDL bottom metal that I may use with a R700-V ADL in .243. R700s are pretty good barreled actions at their price point.
