I would like to see what you guys are using for steel targets at 500+ yds.
I use a 25"x15" ar500 steel man target from LV Steel. The problem is not hearing
it ring at ext. ranges. Also, it's static and doesn't move so you can't tell if you hit it at anything
over 700yds with wind blowing through my ear pro.
Ideas? Thanks.

3/8 AR500, reactive and audible in most conditions out to 1200 yards with 105 grain 6mm bullets.

Hang your man target he'll get reactive! All static target at range have more of a smack sound and yes hard to hear. If your not following thru in good form this is not helping. When you fire and are on the rifle correctly you should be able to see the splash of the round on steel maybe not the hit but the dust looking stuff coming off the target. Our targets have been painted many times over with white paint that could be helping with the dust cloud coming off our steel not sure. All my new steel is reactive so haven't paid much attaintion to the splash on them.

If you could modify it so it hangs from the stand and make a Hit flag for it. I cant post pictures but I built hit flags for my plates using thin wall tubing and welded a piece of square sheet metal to them. Basically you have a piece of tubing that extends about 20 inches out from the back of the plate. Have a piece of square sheet metal fixed to the end of the tubing (the flag) and paint it a bright color. With this setup, if your plate moves even a small amount, you will see the flag moving up and down even from distance. This works good for me mainly because I almost never have a spotter when I'm shooting. Of course, this will only work with a hanging plate. But it does work pretty well. One other thing, the flag cant be too heavy especially on smaller plates. If it is, the plate will sit at about a 30 degree up angle. Hope this helps.
Good shooting.

If you hang it with a "stretchable" cord (something with a little 'spring' to it), instead of a chain or rope, you'll get a lot of action out of it, action you can easily see from long range.

I use the Sniper's Hide Big Dog steel reactive head/body target and make sure to place it in area with loose surrounding dirt and not brush so that I can so the dirt splash up. Otherwise the other option is to get a suppressor so that you can hear the target hits, good excuse for one at least.

I got this guy from Midway. What's nice is I can hear it with ear muffs at distance, that's saying something because I normally have to be tapped at pistol matches because I can't hear the shot timer.

Also swings nice, easy to tell if its hit. 9 inches made of AR550, 3/8s. I have shot the crap out of it but no dents.

Not my targets, but just scrap steel misc parts for a stand.

I think this one was closer than 500 but the others at 5, 6, 7, 8, and 1300 are similar.

they make a nice audible "bong" and react pretty good when struck.

I have found the larger thinner targets tend to move more and make more of a noise when you hit them. If you only use them at distance, yo ushouldnt have to worry too much about damge to them. Unless you get start using AP rounds....

Recently got the SH Big Dog Steel reactive head/chest but haven't had a chance to break it in yet.

"Wolfie" is also AR500. Easy to see and hear impacts, even beyond 1000.

I don't remember what thickness you got but as others have said the the 3/8" would make a lot better gong sound than the 1/2" or 5/8".
Also If you like I can add the hanging brackets to the back so you can hang it for a better sound.
Thanks

Spring Loaded Steel Targets

Here's what I got from Kurt @ LV Steel targets.

Sorry about the half ass paint job.

I can't wait to take this set up out to my spot in the desert.
The target is a 25"x 15" man in 3/8". The swing set brackets are also made my Kurt.
The target is very well cut and its is made really solid. I know that this will last me forever. Can't say much for the conduit but the target is awesome.
I originally was going to buy black pipe but it would be really heavy and much more expensive. The emt conduit is cheaper and lighter but I don't think it
will withstand a whole lot of 308 hits.
Thanks Kurt for my second steel target, and hopefully I will get more.

Pipes: 1" EMT electrical conduit
Cross pipe: 5'
Front (2) pipes: 5'
Rear (2) pipes: 7'

White paint is your friend. I can see even 6mm variants at 1k when we got fresh paint.Psinclair, ive tried to convert some of the fellas down here to the baler belting. That stuff is dang near indestructible. Its hands dn best material in my book.

I've got some AR500 targets from Bobcat Steel, a local company in Indiana. I've got some 4" and 6" squares, a 66% IPSC and 3 prairie dogs. the squares and the 66% I hang from chain. The prairie dogs, I bought some 1.25x1.25" angle and cut it to about 24". I drilled a hole in the corner of the angle iron and ran a grade 8 bolt through it and the target with a piece of heater hose between the target and the angle iron to give a little space between. Hammer the angle iron into the ground and it's GTG. I've shot it and heard it out to 600 yds. I've shot a pdog target(not mine) at 1k with the 338 and had some difficulty hearing the hit.

For extended range shooting, I really like 1/4" Premium AR500. It is plenty tough to take millions of hits from 308 type rifles at 700 yards and out. And it rings like a BELL!!! ANd its lighter, so moves a little more. All around a better product for long range shooting in my opinion.

We have a 1/4" AR500 100% IPSC that is really popular right now. For around $155 shipped it is tough to beat.

Dacam, that Is a sweet target system you have, Now go out and bang away!!
