16-18 inch shorty rifles

Thanks for the compliment sir. These rifles are Catching On Fast! I highly recommend it for a Hunting/Scout/General Truck Rifle! My setup turned out better than I expected, but for general Hunting Purpose I would also seriously consider the B&C M40A1 Stock. I think it'll be a Perfect match for this rifle without breaking the Bank.

Ohhhhhhh my!!!!

.308 Win
Big Horn Sporter S/A
Big Horn 20 MOA scope base
Holland Recoil lug
Rock 1-11.27 @ 16.5"
McMillan HTG w/RAD camo
Shilen trigger
PT&G Tactical BDL BM
Nightforce 2.5-10 x 32 MOAR Reticle
Griffin Armament tactical rings - low

My "ugly duckling" of a shorty

Remmy 700 .308
Factory barrel cut to 18", threaded with knurled and crowned thread protector (anxiously awaiting the group buy Templar Archangel to show up)
Bedded in Manners T4
CDI bottom metal
Badger tactical knob and 20MOA base
Currently topped with a Leupy Mark 4 3.5-10 TMR (until the B.E.A.S.T. finally gets delivered)

All work done by J.D. Thomas (formerly of McMillan) at highspeedshootingsystems.com. It's not J.D.'s fault that I occasionally insist on spraying beautiful rifles with krylon. After I have him switch it over to a McMillan A4 I think ARP over at ontargetcustoms.com may get it for a custom finish.

I'll tell you that the velocity on this shorty SUCKS, but the accuracy is GREAT, so I don't mind waiting a full extra second longer than the other shooters to hear the "gong" from a steel plate at 1k

I've posted this rifle before. I had it in a McRee folding chassis but switched it out to a Mirage ULR prototype chassis. This set up shot really well over the weekend.

Got any more pics of that chassis mate?

Do they by any chance make a folder version of this chassis? Whats the weight of this current setup if you dont mind me asking compare to your mcree folder setup before?

Thanks!

HOG

Shorty next to a longy for comparison

Sweet rig! Thanks for posting, but am curious what the "B.E.A.S.T." scope refers to that you are waiting on?

hopkins kindly found the link for me, thanks man.
Thanks for the compliment on the rifle, I'm so used to "defending" it, I'm not used to compliments. I usually have to listen to the LE 'snipers' at the range talk trash about the short barrel as they keep their 26" bbls inside 100yds (double-checked with a LRF no less). They can't comprehend that THAT little guy has gone beyond 1200.
As much as I love it, I'm afraid it may either get parked in the safe awaiting a possible caliber change or sold now that I've purchased a GAP-built Surgeon. I'd already begun the process for the newest upgrades, but now going to have to figure where this one fits in between the 16" OBR and the 20" GAP. Sentiment alone will likely keep this one around.

Sorry you have to keep "defending" the rifle. I'd say it's just from their ignorance of ballistics. I got a kick out of your little jab that they double check their under 100-yard distance with a LRF; that had me rolling!! LOL! I'm a huge fan of the short barrel rifles, especially in this thread. I just bought one here from a Hide member that will hopefully arrive next week. It's a 16" one, with a brake added on. :) If you are ever up for selling the rifle, I might be interested in maybe talking with you.

Thanks, I'll definitely get in touch with you if I decide to let it go. I try not to bash the snipers from my old dept because I worked with a lot of them on other units, and it't the ultimate case of training for YEARS for a shot they're not likely to ever get to take, but when it's time they're the only guys who can take it. My dept just sort of went sniper-crazy and on top of the snipers assigned to both of our full-time SWAT teams, we also had a Homeland Security "sniper team" of, I think, 8 officers who were supposed to supplement the SWAT guys, so we had at least 12 snipers.
The tragedy was that the Homeland guys had to supply their own rifles, so guys were going out and buying 15lb rifles with 26" barrels or LONGER and putting MASSIVE optics on them, etc. They'd break out these ENORMOUS rifles to shoot basically across a street. I kept asking why they didn't pick up a short-barrel custom for a fraction of the cost of the AI's and some of the other rigs, and they would steadfastly insist that they needed the accuracy of a longer barrel. No amount of discussion was going to convince them otherwise.

started as a 700p .308, had the barrel cut from 26 to 18" and threaded, added a badger fte micro. it's loud.

b4 brake

worst thing about cutting it is that the old load data was trashed, new powder tried for the first time. 2 5 round groups @ 100 yards, still working the load (bubba gunsmith job seemed to work well enough)

after brake (added 2" to the overall length)

I'm with you on short barrels, but police snipers should be buying AIs, given the reliability problems common to modified hunting rifles.

That's wicked. What action did you use? That's a big bore !

It's a Pierce Engineering SA. (Rem M700 clone).

I've set it up to be a 'swtich barrel' so I can save on safe real estate, expensive scopes and other equipment. I've got a couple other cartriges/barrels with the same boltface.

If it doesn't manage to get the blood pumping then I'll run the reamer in another .675" and use 300RUM brass and try double the powder. :D

I'm a sucker for big bore brush guns. I've been to three big name gunsmiths and none will take on my project.... I've been trying to get a custom 45/70 bolt gun built on a Rem 700 action.... Or Savage!..

Getting those rimmed cases to feed from a magazine could be interesting in a M700. I've not even sure how stubby bullets will work on my 510 WSM, figured I'd try it and worry about the details later. It's at least as good as an antique 50-110 Sharps and should be more powerful than a 50 Alaskan. If this barrel shoots nicely then I'll thread the muzzle and suppress subsonic 700-900 cast slugs.

I put together this little 17'' howa for my dad a couple years back. I have no pictures of how it sits today. Bit roughed up last time I saw it, but at least it's being used as it was intended to be.

Makes me wish i wouldn't have sold my HS stock that came on my 5R :( very nice build. Going to have to pick up an 18" .30 cal barrel from AAC if they go on sale again and put together one of those.

yeah the 5R stock is pretty good really. very lightweight with a good shape to the forend. i just dont think it matches up to the 5R rifles though.

And that there is the problem that no gunsmith will tackle!...

75gr vmax's at 3000fps isn't too bad. Longer ranges I'll use the 87gr vmax at 2800-2900fps

that rifle is mainly for shooting coyotes and stuff inside 500 yards.

I am thinking of building a short barreled 243 to shoot the 87s, what powder you using?

Saving my pennies for a Leupold Mark 6 3-18 CMR-W....... Gotta confirm at least 2550fps, with 175's in this 16.5" tube, first though. Maybe the primers won't fall out of the case!

I don't know how to post the big pics yet on the new sight but here is my 18" Rem700 308. This is the first 10 shot group I've ever attempted along with the first 5 shot 500 yard group I ever tried. Shot a lot of steel at distance but never shot a group at long range.

Factory barrel in a Manners T5 with the mini chassis and Southwest 175s.

I screwed up bad on one shot in each group, leaves me plenty of room for improvement.

Seems like pretty good pep from an 18" 308 with 175s...

That's an AAC brake, right? Does it work well?

I was more than a little surprised with the velocity as well, but my magnetospeed has been spot on from day one. AAC must be using decent specs on the barrels and I am sure the nitrate bath helps as well.

The Brake is AAC and it works well enough to make this light rifle (it’s in a HS PSS stock now) pleasant to shoot. It probably not as effective as a multi port design that’s honed out by a smith but for a plug and play it’s a good brake. Best of all with the 18” barrel the concussion isn’t as bad as I was expecting. I believe that may be caused by the design pretty much pushing the gas out 90 degrees from the shooter rather than having angled ports other designs use that still send gas back toward the shooter to some degree.

Keep me posted on that AAC barrel. I'm wanting one for a shorty build. Hows 1 in 8 handling 175s? Seems like they set them up for sub-sonic use but i'd rather use 168-175s.
