Going with .270, LETS TALK BARRELS

Hey guys, my final decision came down to .270 and 30-06 for my custom build. Going with .270 now. 30-06 for the next build. My question is...

What barrel length and twist rate do I want for the .270?
AND...
Which barrel manufacturer? (I'm sure any of the top brands will do me just as well as the next)

Thanks :)

What do you plan to do with the 270? The 150 Accubond Long range bullet would be nice, also 150 VLD's are nice. 1:10 twist for 150's and under and maybe 24"-26" barrel.

I plan on hunting with it but also getting out to the range and seeing how far out I can stretch it. My research has pointed to a 22" barrel with 24" recommended right after that. I am putting it in an XLR Chassis so I am hoping to find some pictures of a 22"-24" barrel in the chassis so I know what forend tube length to go with and what I think looks the best.

Then why not go with 6.5-06 over .270? MUCH better projectiles, trajectory, BC, etc. Unless you just want to buy off the shelf ammo.

Words escape me right now.

i think the more important question than which barrel is which bullet? love the 270, hell even like the 6.8 spc but long range bullet selection for lack of better words sucks. 150 gr vld makes a good hunting round but get a 6.5 mm and the selection improves or a 7mm and the selection improves dramatically. I really wish the 277 cal bullets got more love, i think the 270 with the right bullet would make a tremendous long range round but alas not enough people agree with me or at least not enough bullet manufacturers

I agree. There is much better selection for either 6.5 or 7mm. If you're torn between 270 and 30-06, maybe a 280 would suit you perfectly?

If you want to stick with 270, as for barrels, I have a new rem take-off barrel in 270 that I won't ever use...

.270 is my go to hunting round, but I think a good light weight stock designed more for hunting would serve you best. save that chassis for the next build

Oh I am so sorry. I was not aware that there were rules that made it illegal to put a .270 in a chassis that would be used for hunting. I give my sincerest apologies.
I already have a perfect Hs precision stock for hunting with that I could swap it with. I just can't get over how cool that XRL chassis is

Not sure if there are any .277 bullets out there that can take advantage of anything quicker than a 1-10" twist.

I would go with the old 30-06, in a tighter twist barrel to take advantage of those heavy high bc bullets. Just far more choices in bullets than the 270.

I have been debating having a light weight hunting rifle built and 30-06 would be the pill I would choose because it covers all bases on this continent and is available every where.

You are going with a hunting cartridge and intending to use it for hunting, but then you want to build it as a tactical rifle. Its not that you "can't" do it, but its one of those things you "shouldn't" do. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Decide if you want a hunting gun or a tactical rifle. Then build. You're going to end up with a rifle that isn't good at anything if you aren't careful. By the way, selecting components because "they look so cool" is a dumb reason. Function is the most important thing.

You dont see that many 270s.. But I saw a guy at Thunder valley.. That has a 270 hunting..an old wood one...with a brake..and a night force 6-22 ..out shoot almost eveyone at the range one day. It was 21moa to 100... a lazer..but he has to wait for his skinny barrel to cool sometimes..lol.. I always think its funny when some red neck brings their old hunting rifle out and kicks a$$..lol.. They guy beside him had a $10,000 6xc.. that guy with the hunting rifle wass kicking his a$$

Thanks guys.. I am stuck with a 700 Long Action previously in 270. i have a bunch of ammo left over. I want a multi purpose, functional rifle. I was planning on 270 because i have alot of it and everyone needs at least one 270, -06 and .308 so i figured Ill do my 270 now, then move on to the other two.
I already have that HS precision stock that could be interchangeable with the XRL stock for hunting to tacticool stuff. The reality is I wont be competing with this particular rifle or hardly ever getting out past 500 yards at any range nearby. I think the 270's accuracy and ballistics will do just fine for me. The XRL may not be classified as a hunting stock/ chassis but i dont see much of a problem with it. unless it is just waaay too heavy?
I dont know, ill figure this out. All your input is very helpful!
