sorry if this has been asked already- how does the new smaller grained varget meter and will the xtra grains have any effect in the amount of the case volume used.

Yes. Smaller volume will equal less wasted binded space.

Also will bind less in the throwers so yea it will be better than longer sticks

There are reports of Varget being shipped with labels stating that it has a new, shorter cut. There has been speculation that Hodgdon is simply using labels left over from when Varget was introduced. As far as I know, no one has posted a comparison of the so-marked powder vs the standard. Varget, by design, is a short cut powder.

The 8-pound jug that just arrived at my door has no mention of a new, shorter cut. Just says Made in Australia, Packaged in USA.

I have some that is 4 years old and some that is 2 months old, they look the same. Sounds like advertising copy to me. Maybe referreing to being shorter than IMR4064 or some other brand stick powder.

FWIW, I just got an 8# jug yesterday from the last batch sold by Third Generation Shooting Supply about a week ago and it has the same label as the one from a couple of years ago. Looks the same too!

I had a couple 1lb jugs I got from a buddy that said new shorter cut, but also did not say extreme series powder. Thought it odd. Then I noticed the top portion of the label said in business over 35 years and had an anniversary label on the lid.

Did the quick math in my head--they were from like 1996 or something thereabouts.

I've since used them but think he has another few pounds of it and will be by his place tomorrow. If so, I'll take a picture to post to see if that's what folks are talking about.

I would not be surprised if stuff sitting in the back of peoples closets are making their way to the marketplace. With the current conditions I have seen some weird shit show up at gun stores lately, I recently picked up a bunch of Sears Robuck 22LR ammo at a local shop. Haven't seen that in maybe 30 years?

Here's what I was talking about, the new improved shorter cut may actually be the really, really old Original Varget. But burns great. One on left is new Varget, right the old--notice the years in business at the top and the anniversary label on the lid saying 1946-1996.
